I was hoping to get some opinions on this half dollar. It is nicely struck and lusterous, but what do you think about the scratch on her head? Would PCGS slab this one with that mark?? What would be a good price to buy this one at?/ Thanks
Can't answer your question, but it certainly looks like the seller is an honest one, laying out a complete description of both the good and the bad. Rather refreshing.
Scare coin in PCI/ACG holder is a guarantee the coin has serious problem. I believe the seller or previous owner have once tried NGC/PCGS and the coin was not slabbed, hence it's in PCI holder.
I think ancas would net it. Cleaned-scratched-bent.
The rim looks bent at about 5 o'clock.
Since the seller offers a return then you could alway's return it but if you plan on getting it in a pcgs/ngc holder I wouldn't count on it.
I would guess it's bright silver in color in real life. The background has the same golden hue to it and where the light hits the rim of the coin it looks white.
I concur with Tom and Taro. I'd guess that the scratch is the least of the problems on that coin. I can tell you right now that it's been cleaned and messed with in more ways than one. I know it'll be tempting because it's going to go for such a "good" price, but consider how much it'll cost you in the long run after you have to dump it at a loss and buy another one that's actually nice.
Sure looks pleasing to me. Great return policy too. Looks like the real deal. (I agree with the broad statements regarding PCI- believe me, I'm no defender of them, but I did just receive in the mail a 1837 PCI XF40 Bust half that is all there and then some. PCI makes grading mistakes- in both directions.)
I have to agree with Braddick. PCI is all over the map. I bought a rainbow toned PCI MS66 Seated Dime from Centsles that has concentric green and gold circles on obverse and reverse. I cracked it and sent it to NGC who (IMO conservatively) graded it MS65*. I wouldn't take less than a grand for it. I think I paid $350 on eBay for the coin.
To state the other side, I stopped buying PCI after the label changed to gold. So, I can't comment on what they are doing now.
who cares what the various plastic co's think? it's a nice coin! not worth au, though, i'd net it down drastically to xf because of the scratches. why such a drastic downgrade? because this coin is readily available in nice, prob-free au. also, looks awful white, no doubt dipped.
I've seen a local dealers inventory that has been rummaged through pci's new gold label slabs, and BELIEVE ME, they are terrible. The older pci material was ok, at times. The new, gold label slabs are a very close cousin to acg, in my opinion. I'm with Tonelover on this particular coin. I'd net it down to vf or so, and bid accordingly, if the problems don't bother you too much.
itsnotjustme -- regarding the damage at the top, it almost looks holed and very skillfully plugged. I agree, its a weird coin, in a sense almost too attractive for the grade. Still, for a very modest price not a bad acquisition.

I wouldn't go over $230 myself.
