Pop 1/0???

Well, so much for the accuracy of the pop numbers on Heritage's listings! It lists this one as a pop 1 with none higher, but they have 2 for sale right now in MS-66 1857-S As it turns out, NGC has graded 12 in 66 with none higher. It's a beautiful coin, but personally since I'm not worried about my registry set, I'd rather spend the money on a CA 57-S in 64, and a Bro. Jo. 65-S in 64.

I know gold is one of the most "stable" metals out there, but it never ceases to amaze me how beautiful those things are after more than a century on the bottom of the ocean...

  • Did you ever see the Discovery channel (or History or Learning Channel, I forget which) special on the Central America? It's amazing how they started, and then end up like this. Some of them came up from the bottom in a corroded brick of coins, where the stacks/rolls were just encrusted. They soaked them in some sort of solution, and then gently flaked off all the crud and there you have it. Absolutely amazing!
