MS70, it can happen.........

while cruising the pop report i noticed that there are 79 west point $1 commemoratives that have been graded ms-70. Note these are "circulation strike" coins. At the same time there has only been ONE kennedy half in pr70 since 1998. So by deductive reasoning, the mint is now making coins more perfectly in circulation strikes than they are in proof coinage. Huh?

A 70 grade at PCGS, especially since 1988, has very little to do with the mint. It has to do with PCGS.

commems tend to be of better quality... and the west point mint, which did all of the west point commems, has much less production, so its coins tend to be of better quality (I think)

WHile commemoratives are "circulation strikes" they are certainly not handled like circulation strike coins! Of course, proofs aren't either. Have to agree with you on the point that MS70 grades from PCGS, in recent years, are easier to get than PR70DCAM

I think you have a better chance of taking a picture of Bigfoot, than you do of getting a PR70DCAM...image

  • I know commemoratives are struck in circulation and proof coins. sort of redundant. it is not likely that you will ever get one in change at the bank. i really was slamming the total lack of proof 70 kennedys in the last 4 years. So if they can make perfect circ strikes why not perfect proof strikes? It's gotta be in the grading. Like it is ok to grade commems 70 but nothing else? or what?

Presleyh - When you get the answer to your question please let us all know because we are a puzzled as you. A number of us have submitted perfect (Under 10X glass) coins for upgrade to PR-70 DC, only to have them retured as PR-69DC. The only reason we can think, of why some series are getting a few 70 grades is to create a market for the new series and the Hell with the Kennedy Half Dollars and older series. Bear

  • somebody has a westpoint 2002 ms70 on ebay with a bin at 575.00, its at 107 on the first day. not bad for a 32.00 coin.
  • A legitimate reason: All other things being equal, tiny flaws are more readily visible on a PR coin than a MS coin.

A cynical reason: Surfaces of proof coins are much more fragile, and PCGS may be reluctant to give the PR70 grade if they are worried a problem may develop down the road and cost them $1000.

The easy solution is to get yourself a nice MS69/PR69 and not worry about it. image

    1) The grade of PR70 does not exist at PCGS anymore. They will not grade a coin PR70.

    2) The stopped giving the PR70 grade to appease the dealers by firming up the market for these coins.

    3) You'd have to be an idiot to pay big money for a PR70 when you fully know that you are buying plastic.
  • Huh? Your #2 reason doesn't make sense. If anything it has discouraged dealers... you can't make money on coins you can't make. And there aren't enough PR70s circulating to do much buying/reselling either.

However, it could be part a vast conspiracy by collectors who purchased them a couple years ago. They are the ones who've benefitted. image
