1927-S Quarters

Do you think that a 1927-S SLQ is a good investment in grades G-VG. Looking at the prices it seems they can only go upimage Give me your thoughts

  • the price guides are a good indicator on the availablity of this issue. relatively 'common' below vf. better as a vf and much better as xf. attractive and well struck issues in au and better are keys in the series.

No, a good INVESTMENT grade is VF to AU. Lower grades appreciate more slowly. A good COLLECTOR grade is Good to Fine.

    TRUTH
  • When talking about coins as an investment there are two really important elements

1: RARITY- How rare is it? How replaceable is it? How often do I see this date and grade available?

2: EYE APPEAL- When walking around on the bourse floor at the thousands of coins in the displays. There is that one coin that clearly blows the others away in eye appeal. That is the coin that everyone is going to want and that is the coin that will be in the highest demand.

We can collect coins and really enjoy filling dates with the grades that we can comfortably afford. This is what makes coin collecting fun. When collecting coins for investing, rarity and eye appeal absolutely have to be taken into consideration.

Precisely my philosophy. I couldn't have said it better.

    mbmbiker,
I have a hard time passing up a nice GD 27-S for $2-3. Fewer minted than a 32-D or S Washington at 5% the price!

    itsnotjustme,
Where can you find a 27-s going for $2-3 the least i've seen them for is $10?

My mom gave each of us kids one coin, about 25 years ago. I got an AU-50 Monroe Doctrine half. My older brother got a 27-S quarter, in F-VF. What a lucky dude. But I guess he was the imminent coin collector of us, and maybe he got to choose first.

I actually think the 1927-s is a great investment especially in the lower grades. It is only a matter of time before it pops up drastically. At $20 each you can't go wrong. Only 396k minted.

NO, definitely NOT. in fact, the coin is much more common even in f-12 then price guides lead you to believe.

really, the aspect more important then "grade" w/ these coins is STRIKE. in grades of vf +, you can easily discern the poorly struck coins (common) from the nicely struck coins (very scarce). if you are looking to invest, i suggest w/ this particular coin you dump your notions of grade, & focus on nicely struck coins, by which i mean solid shield & drapery detail. THOSE are the scarce ones.
