On E-BAY auctions you see a pic of some beautiful proof coins IKES, SBA`s. But then you read that this is not the actual coin but a pic of one just like it.As a newbie I have a hard enough time looking at actual pics of the actual coin and making a decision. Is it just because I am a babe in the woods or is this practice slightly disturbing to more experienced collectors?

Doesn't bother me any as long as the seller has a good return policy. In the case of David Hall, I haven't had to return one yet. Wish I could say the same for some other well known sellers.

They and others will do that only with some common moderns which in their opinion look pretty much alike at the same grade. It saves time on imaging on some lower cost items. What is also happening now [and some recent threads have appeared about it] is that some sellers are swiping images from other auctions and displaying them as their coins without the disclaimer.

'Tis. The "this is not necessarily the coin you will be getting" line is a warning sign.

For less expensive coins or more "generic" modern proofs, it may not be a stumbling block. Indeed, once or twice I've been pleasantly surprised about what I've received. But you could be disappointed, too. You may want to steer clear of auctions like this unless there is a good return policy, or you know and have done business with the dealer in the past.

I just picked up a couple of PCGS slabbed Kennedy proofs from DHRC that "weren't the coin pictured", and they were nice coins. No problems with them at all.
