BACKUP PLAN?
The Seattle Supersonics may have finally given up on the pipe dream; with sources close to Rashard Lewis, saying there was a drop dead date issued to the Sonics to find a ‘suitable’ sign and trade offer or Lewis would walk to Dallas. The Sonics last week brought in free agent forward Popeye Jones, and may have earmarked him; as a solution should, the club lose Lewis to the Mavericks. The problem with this plan is the Sonics cannot offer Popeye much in terms of dollars, as they want to stay under the Luxury tax. A sign and trade deal with the Wizards (who would like to retain Jones), is out of the question - or is it?. Word has it the Wizards may have entered the Rashard Lewis race, looking to make a deal with Seattle, hence the meeting with Jones. The way the deal plays out would likely send a re-signed Lewis to the Wizards in exchange for a re-signed Popeye Jones and Chris Whitney. Whit’s deal has a team option next year, so technically he could be in the last year of his deal, and creates some space next summer, while Jones could fetch the $2.5 to $3 million he is said to be seeking. Reports suggest that Jones is looking for a multi-year deal, rather than a huge cash payday, meaning there could be room. The problem with signing and trading Rashard to a deal much more than he makes are the complex Base Year rules, which would complicate a deal and appears to be the main reason Houston and Seattle have been unable to make a deal. Sources close to the Wizards said that a deal for Rashard Lewis was not on deck for them, and that talks about Popeye Jones leaving Washington might be premature as the club is still negotiating to keep him in Washington.

The Advisor for Dallas Maverick restricted Free Agent Wang Zhizhi, Simon Chan, told the Star Telegram's Dwaine Price, that he felt within the next five to 10 days, that the Mavericks would sign and trade Wang to one of four teams, which include the Warriors, Raptors, Magic or Knicks saying "Wang doesn't want to leave Dallas, but there's a 99 percent chance he's going to leave. For the sake of the Mavericks' relationship with China, they may let him go." The Mavericks are in a tough spot as they desperately want to keep Wang in the fold, but they have a standing agreement to support China, and have pledged to support their demands of Wang, meaning if they in turn sign him, while he is in defiance of the Chinese Basketball Federation, it would likely destroy the frame work for relations they have spent the last 4 years building, and internally the Mavs are saying that’s not something they are willing to give up for Wang, as much as they like him. Of the clubs mentioned by Chan, none claims to have a deal on the table with Dallas. Mark Cuban has responded to incoming media requests, saying there was nothing new to report.

That would be a stupid trade... our owner is stupid... he has been ever since he's been there except when they picked up Lewis in 98-99 and Mason in 00-01 and signed Mason to extension 03-04
Now Popeye, what the? he sucks... but just think for a second
Vladimir Radmanovic is good... he will probably start in Lewis's place if he goes and they dont pick up a nice forward in return... right? so that would be Payton, Mason, Radmanovic, ?, and James... maybe they might move Mase to SF and have Rad play the PF... which would be like the Lakers offense... the triangle with big James in the middle
becuz if they moved Mason to SF... that would leave the SG open for Barry
now the Sonics have Payton, they just got Kenny Anderson, and Joseph Forte... I think they have enough guards now
maybe besides Popeye, look for Etan Thomas instead
but its all stupid and messed up... heck with the Wizards
