Pricing of Flowing Hair Silver Plug Dollars

Published coins "trends" (e.g. - PCGS or the "Redbook") suggest there is little or no premium for the silver plug variety versus a standard Flowing Hair Dollar. But, everytime I see one up for auction, prices seems well above the "unplugged" coin. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Silver plugs aren't as uncommon nowadays as once thought. Unfortunately, going along with their increased appearances is also an increase in their popularity. Everyone now wants an Early Dollar, and every Early Dollar collector now wants a silver plug. It's all the rage...

Silver plugs deserve to command a premium; you should find an ugly F12 specimen going for at least $4K. But, how much of a premium really depends on how rare is the specific silver plug variety. There are only certain Bolender/BB varieties known to have a silver plug. Of them, the BB-18 is the most common and the BB-14 and BB-27 are very rare with silver plugs (even though they are actually quite available without the silver plugs).

Currently, I think prices are a bit high for silver plugs as with the entire series. But, the premium relative to the series seems within norms given their increased popularity and relative scarcity!

too much emphasis was placed early on when the S.P.'s were 1st discovered. however, silver plug halves are much rarer. i have only seen 1, though i;ve heard of others.
