Thoughs on a Large Cent appreciated

I would be curious to hear opinions of the 1851 MS67 (NGC) large cent on the David Lawrence site:

Large Cents

A bit pricey, but . . .

  • It looks like a beautiful piece. Looks like there's a little underlying red in the obverse. It would be interesting to see in person to gauge how much remaining lustre the coin had. As for the price, I'm not sure what the range for this piece would be, but it doesn't sound absurd. Good luck!

Sorry about that, it really was working earlier -- I think David Lawrence is having trouble with their web site.

    Sweet! It's worth the price.

Amazing. But I personally would be just as happy with an MS65. The two points of technical grade don't make that big a difference to me.

Actually, for the same money, one could arguably find a certified MS65 RD.

I sold THIS ONE on eBay for significantly less money than that. (Believe me, that's a dark picture of it, too.)

It had been consigned to me by my local dealer. I wish I could have afforded to buy it for myself at the time. A year later, I saw it in a case at the 2002 FUN show in January; it apparently had changed hands again. It was the exact same coin- the cert numbers matched. Small world, huh? That dealer had it priced about $1,000 above what I had sold it for on eBay a year before.

Of course, some folks would rather have a 67 BN than a 65 RD. A matter of personal preference, I suppose. I'd pick the coin I sold. If I ever see it again, I'll have to buy it, if the price isn't too absurd.

The ms/67 (?) coin is very nice indeed. I don't have my sheets in front of me, but the price doesn't SEEM absurd. It has some marks on the second one in the date, and something on the rev. rim between the S and T. Excellent strike, and nice red highlights through the brown. I tend to ignore the given grade on coins like this, and just weigh the price vs. how much the coin appeals to me. This one appeals to me!! image
