  • I hope so -- otherwise, why did they take a photo of that not-worth-the-cost-of-plastic coin when so many others go unphotographed? Bizarre.

You anti-modern people always have to slam the Sac buck, don't you? ALL MODERN COINS ARE WORTHY OF PHOTOGRAPHY, SO STOP SLAMMING THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, the coins taken up in the Space Shuttle were minted in San Francisco (if I remember the Discovery Channel program correctly).

I thought the space shuttle coins were minted in WestPoint.
  • Yep, the gold ones were West Point. Still 12 around somewhere, presumably.

They minted gold ones in $1 and $5 denominations.
  • Where'd the rims go on that proof one?
  • jtryka, good question, maybe that's part of the photo strategy -- have to bid to find out! image

gmarguli, did they actually mint any $5 Sacs? I thought that was Plan B after people squawked about the 22K $1 coins, i.e. they were going to relase it like a $5 commem, but I didn't think it ever got off the ground.
  • I thought the deal was that they didn't have congressional authorization for the gold commems, so that's why it never happened.

  • that sac is a dog even for a sac. au58 maybe? if it sells for 9.00 i think i will list whats in the ashtray of my pickup truck.
  • Actually greg, you can't say for sure whether there were any $5 pieces struck or not. From the article referenced by your link:

<< <i>None of the documents released as a result of Ravnitsky's FOIA appeal give any indication whether any Proof Sacagawea gold dollars were struck with the five dollars reverse and if so, when, how many, and their disposition. >>

One thing I saw in the article which I knew but which isn't widely known was the use of the 2000-S dies to produce the test runs at the Philadelphia mint. That in turn brings another thought to mind. About two months ago in the Letters to the Editor in Numismatic News a writer was talking about the variety of dollar coins he had gotten the previous day from the Post Office stamp machine. He had gotten some SBA's a couple of 2001-P a few 2000-P's some 2000-D's and one 2000-S. I was surprised in the weeks that followed that no one ever made any comments about it either in the letters, on any of the forums or in any other publication.. I mean here someone claims to have received a coin which we know was struck but which supposedly none of which are supposed to exist and no one says anything.

Conder101, a 2000-S could have just been a circulated proof.
