1981 TYPE II PROOF SETS?

I know I have read something in the past but can't find it. Does anyone have clear pictures of the Type I & Type II proof coins for 1981? What is the greysheet price for these two sets?

Thanks.

  • As a noob, I'd like to see that as well.

    Hey, BigTony -

Is the "greysheet" something that reflects real values, rather than the phony ones
we have to apply an algorithm to? Where would one find such a thing?

type 2 has the weird san serif bend on the top of the S....sheet on a full type 2 set
    is 230 (81) and 110 (79)

    Dan,

    http://www.greysheet.com

Pretty much useless in our series.

  • Seems like alot of the references are useless.

It's bizarre. Why doesn't anyone seem to feel that accurate pricing is important?
There must be some deep, inner meaning to all this - but I fail to grasp it.

Coins are a bloody commodity. I just don't understand why no one will compile
    real values for them. image

The problem with the Greysheet is that it only lists prices up to PR65. It caters more to classics collectors then moderns.

  • The Capitalist geek in me says opportunity is knocking.

I'd bet a dime that "real" prices could be mined with a PERL script...
subscription service... nice interface... a new dot-com is born.

  • The Red Book has good photos of them in the SBA section. Same mintmark varieties apply to all the denominations, though the SBA varieties are the most valuable in typical condition.
  • Copied from another post I just made that you might find helpful.

To see what known examples of the S mintmark variations look like in real life, you can look at proof coins from these years:

    1978 - Same as 1979 Type 1
    1980 - Same as 1979 Type 2, 1981 Type 1
    1982 - Same as 1981 Type 2

Scroll down near the bottom of this WEBPAGE and you'll see close-up pictures of the different mintmark varieties for the SBA's.

  • To add to the confusion, as i understand it not all coins in a proof holder are necessarily all type 1 or type 2. I bought an 81 proof set last week and the dealer had identified it as a type 2 jefferson only proof set, meaning the other coins were type 1. I must confess i have strained both eyes trying to be certain of the difference.

It is very common to get only 1 or 2 type II coins in a 1981 proof set. The prices listed for the set are for complete sets in original packaging. Don't pay high prices for sets out of the package or if it looks like the package has been opened and resealed. The prices for individual coins are much less than the set. The dollar is the key.
You will find the cent trades at about 3x the type I. The nickel is virtually the same price. The dime about 3.5x, the quarter 2.5x, the half 5.2x, The type I dollar is about $8 the type II dollar will set you back about $190.
