Please grade my Morgan

I have an idea (I'm learning!), but I want to confirm. What do you think? There is a tad of toning on the star on the right. The plastic holder has a hole there, I think. I'll be putting this on Ebay soon.

By the way, what do you think of my digital photos?

Obverse

Reverse

Edited to say THANK YOU! and fix the linkage.

64-65 if it's MS. I was going to say 63 but the reverse looks so good image
Is the reeding on the edge nice and deep?

You should get a premium for the reverse if it look's like the picture. It looks like it would be very colorful in real life.

Post a link when you put it on eBay.

  • It is MS. The reeding, from what I can see, is deep. The pix were taken on different days, that is why the lighting looks different. She looks better in person. The camera magnifies everything, sort of like those awful magnifying mirrors. Yikes!

I might bid on it. Put a link when/if you put it on eBay.

That lady needs a new holder. MS-63 if no rub or staple damage.

Obverse; The neck gash kills her, lustre break along her chin through the point of her nose, and, along her brow as well as the cheek hit doesn't help either.......Reverse better but carbon spot on the rim at 3:30.....MS 62

MS 62 - that gash on the neck is killer! Is that a little slash on the chin?? Super weak strike takes away from eye appeal.

I'm going for MS-63, assuming the line on the neck isn't a deep scratch but only a light one that disrupted the luster. Same with cheek. Otherwise a strong MS-62.
  • Jack The Ripper got ahold of her. MS-62

net au-50!!! i believe the coin is cleaned. it is white, except for dirt embetted between the letters on the rev. coindaughter, be careful w/ this one! you might want to check for hairlines. not trying to slam the coin or anything, just trying to give an honest, objective opinion.

    . . . . . . wait a minute . . . . your dad's name is'nt harold, is it??? nah, russ would've caught thatimage

Nice pics. You may want to work on a way to add more light. The pics look a little dark to me.

Now to the grade. I would put this coin at MS63. The reverse looks real good, but the obverse has a few too many big bag marks in the key areas for my tastes. Secondly the coin has a soft strike to it. A lot of Orleans mint Morgans have the weak strikes. If the luster is as good as I'm guessing I'm pretty close on that grade. It's hard for me to really grade a coin with just a picture or a scan. I can't get a feel for the overall eye-appeal of the coin from a picture.

Russ, Start having a little more confidence. You are coming very close.

But it's always good to be cautious. And also jumping out there first shows your willing to learn if you guessed way off.

  • Thanks, everyone. Dorkkarl, I looked carefully at the coin thru a magnifier with good light and I don't detect any hairlines.

    Thanks again!
