this 1857 flyer currently makes its home in an ngc ms65 holder and has an amazing strike. the coin is one of the nicest looking light colored and toned coins i have ever seen for any gem flyer
seems??? like a collector years ago kept this coin because of its light lusterous surfaces and put it into an album where it lightly toned rose around the rims and this can be seen at 6pm on the obverse. the coin is in an older ngc holder where it was slabbed may 1990 to me this coin is a very very nice 65 coin and is like a 65.9 right on the cusp of 66 the eye appeal is nothing short of fantastic and eye appeal wise it is a 66.
i also think the pops on the flyers in ms 64 and 65 are way overstated especially so for the 64 grades close to 50% for the 64 grades as this coin really takes a huge jump from 64 to 65 and this coin is needed by collectors as a type coin also! and in 65 grades this coin i believe to be overstated by as much as 25% in 65 grades as this is something many dealers and collectors have mentiioned to me as well. also for such a high pop in 64 you really never see these coins for sale!
anyway
the lustre really booms off this coin and along with the lightly colored and originally toned surfaces gives this coin a "look" very few gem flyers have in 65 and some 66 holders! pcgs or otherwise!
it just goes to show you buy the coin not the holder!
there are some light toning marks on the coin that some say are from an improper alloy mixture that plagues these coins but many different coin people who have seen this particiular flyer are on the fence about this coin but all agree the visual appeal is superb. myself i just cant figure this coin out as copper and especially so flyers are not within my speciality but this coin has absolutely no streaks or other usually improper alloy mixture "signs" i would like to know for sure but i guess only time will tell! one day maybe!! overall to find a gem flyer with this kind of strike light color and lustre and this type of original album toning is unusual to say the least!
this coin was examined by me and the above conclusions are my own based on my experiences in coins. this coin currently resides in an eastern collection if this file is not on here pm me with your e mail address and i will send to you!

I have seen various color differences in high grade flying eagle cents ranging from a goldish to a tannish, to a light redish/pinkish color, and they are all beautiful IMO. Looking at that coin just makes me want to go out and buy one tomorrow!

Oh, sorry- I thought you said "Holey Marcovan", not "Holy Macaroni".
I slammed your Boone on the other thread- fact is, I hated it, I'm sorry to say. Different strokes for different folks.
But THIS one and your 3cN, I can appreciate.
Very impressive, stunning coin! Thanks for sharin' 'em! (Even the Boone).

Interesting statement....I'm sure you could find more words than that considering the length of your initial post

and something that i have studied for over 30 years
including seening many choice and gem mintstarte flyers, talking with other interested collectors like myself, with a great interest of the same!
now yourself i do not know you so i cant comment on the same i just saw your post about you not going to my threads again or commenting and that if i didnot want you to do that you would agree
so with my statement i said great we are in agreement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i meant that i would let you keep your promise to me that you would not look at my threads again or comment on any of my future past or present posts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
good luck with your collecting interests! and always collect what you like!

to the hilt?????
i wish all my 100+ year old coins were "whizzed" like that. :-)
indian head man that is a very astute observation when the flyer was made this was a public outcry that the eagle looked like a buzzard and it was talked about in numismatic circles for many years after that
that is not the main reason but one of the reasons for the demise of the flyer in such a short period!
for me it does look more like a buzzard than anything else but a very choice desirable buzz if it has the right combo of gem grade and the "look".......lol which i think this coin has.....lol well to find any flyer with great eye appeal whether vf or superb gem is very hard and if you find one buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
especially so in under au grade! always saleable and you will make money! if the coin has great eye appeal in vf xf au is an instant sale in any price you offer now of course you will not sell the coin if you offer a great eye appealling xf coin for slider ms money but you can get strong money for the xf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

1) Note that the light source is way from the left as the devices pick up the light towards the left which is why the coin does not appear more "reflective" towards us creating the false impression that the coin might have been whizzed. Further comments are below.
2) The reverse looks very deeply frosted in the fields and the devices creating a creamy luster effect. This is quite difficult to find in copper issues. See no possibility of whizzing happening there.
3) The obverse is more of the traditional looking die in which I can see what appears to be a partial cartwheel reflection of light from the center of the coin to 6 pm. That is an incredible feat for a cartwheel to have appeared when the light source is so far to the left. That would have been quite unlikely to have happened if that coin that been whizzed.
4) The coin's toning is certainly not "perfect" but it is certainly not a negative and probably 1/2 of the people out there would like the toning enough to call is a positive appeal aspect of the coin while I tend to be more neutral since I am not a big toning fan on copper and copper-nickel alloy coins. But then again copper is one of those strange metals in which collectors, up to now, prize untoned copper and copper alloy much more than their toned brethen. I am one of those freaks that loves perfectly untoned coper and copper-nickel coins!
This coin needs a better light source to show this coin off more properly as I have a feeling this coin looks even better than what we are seeing here now.
Indian Head Man - That eagle (flying) is more than 150 years old
Perhaps an eagle then could be thought of as a buzzard today ?
or visa versa
Michael - perhaps your coin could have been wrapped in tissue paper to have gotten that toning.....it has a nice strike
stewart
very much so!!!!!!!!!!1
i think you hit the nail right on the head!
and stewart i think you also are correct!!
