Slabbed proof sets

Are slabbed proof sets becoming more desirable than those in mint packaging? There’s less uncertainty regarding the quality of the coins if they are slabbed. It’s also easier to put together a set with all the same grade; eg. all PR65 or all PR67 CAM, etc.

    welcome...

some people are willing to pay extra for the original packaging but i prefer slabbed coins off ebay now. if the set was PQ they would not be offering it sight-unseen on ebay. i have a feeling sets that hit ebay are the ones that were the bottom of the barrel.

i've gotten old proof and mint sets that literally looked like someone fed them through a shredding machine.

  • It also depends on the year - if it's a year with some potentially valuable coins then slabbing would be good - if it's a run of the mill year, I'd say leave them where they are.

Depends on the quality of the coins, holders, and year. Older ones are more precarious because the mint packaging isn't good. And it could damage coins some. Newer ones aren't all that stable, as I've discovered with my 1989/1990 prestige/regular proofs. But I prefer original as long as it looks original.
