SHOPPING RASHARD?
Frank Hughes of The News Tribune is reporting that the Sonics may have conceded in their quest to re-sign Rashard Lewis. Apparently, the Sonics have begun entertaining trade talks with teams regarding a sign and trade deal, and Hughes mentions several sources as saying the Sonics and Houston Rockets had discussions that centered around Houston taking on Rashard in a sign and trade deal, while sending out 2nd year stud Eddie Griffin and another player (likely Walt Williams, according to reports). Hughes goes on to say that Houston, unwilling to part with Griffin passed on the deal… So what is the story? Apparently, it has been suggested that Seattle explore their sign and trade options, as Rashard is not willing to return to Seattle, and if a deal was not reached in the next 10 days, he would sign in Dallas. Why did Houston pass? Luxury Tax. The basis of the deal meant Houston added roughly $5 million to their payroll in order to grab Lewis, and would likely put them at risk of taxation, the Rockets would love to acquire Rashard, but they want Seattle to take contracts, not send more to Houston. Walt Williams is not a player in Houston’s plans, so inking him in a sign and trade only means Houston adds money they did not plan to spend. Talks are on going according to league sources. The Mavericks, Wizards and Pacers have been linked to talks with Seattle, according to sources. More as it develops.
