Are PCGS holders completely air tight?

I have heard several people say that they have had coins in PCGS holders tone while in the holder. I have a coin or two that I do not want this to happen to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the NGC now offers a totally air tight holder. Is the PCGS considering offering such a holder?

Am I paranoid because I incase each of my PCGS slabs in baggies with silica desicants?

  • PCGS holders are not airtight, unfortunately. However, it has been established that they are beertight.

LOL. That really puts my mind at ease! Thanks
  • I could have sworn that I heard the old ones were not, but the new ones are.

I could likewise have been mistaken - but those suckers sure look airtight. image

I don't know the answer to your question, Oldcameoproofs, but welcome to the boards!

PS: I thought they were airtight, but according to reports of some people here, it looks like they might not be. They SHOULD be airtight, otherwise what's the sense in slabbing a coin (besides authentication)?

I had heard of this so I posted this question on the NGC Board about 3 or 4 weeks ago. No answer yet!!!!!!!!!!
So I am inclined to believe that it is not true.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

While the slabs may be air-tight, there are still two issues. First water vapor can pass through plastic and the plastic itself may outgas. Each may continue the toning process. Best bet is storage in a cool dry place with a desiccant. (just remember rust never sleeps.)

Interce[t shield makes a box system that holds slabs, and addresses your concern. They line the holder with their product. Try this link.

This has been discussed many times on this forum before and the answer has been NOT airtight. In my opinion this would be a great selling point for NGC or PCGS. I for one would slab my coins in a damage resistant container from whichever of these 2 services would provide them. I suspect others might do so also. I have not used intercept shield (sounds like a diaphragmimage, but I have read the promotional materials and the positive comments on this forum. I thought that one of the tertiary certification services had used them. Unfortunately slabbing gem value coins in slabs that devalue the coin will not work in 2002 for most people.

I have tried a couple of intercept shields but I don't believe those would be considered airtight either. The pliable ring that encircles the coin apparenlt has some chemical that prevents incedental environmental damage. I like them, but it's a pain in the butt to get the ring on to coins sometimes.

caulk the joint all the way around the slab. you can peel the caulk off if you don't want it there anymore.
