1971-S Silver Business Strike PEG LEG IKE

RampageRampage Posts: 9,448 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is there much interest anymore in this variety? I have one that I am going to be selling in the near future, but will not waste my time if no one has an interest in it any more. Does any one know what kind of dollar value it should bring? Grade is around an MS64. But, in my opinion, grade on varieties and errors does not really matter, so the MS64 should not deter folks that much I would hope. Anyway, please reply. Thanks. Richard.

  • According the the Authoratative Reference on Eisenhower Dollars, the 1971-S "Peg Leg" or DDO-007 Variety has the following prices

    MS 60 $25
    MS 63 $60
    MS 65 $150

    No MS 64 Price listed.

You should see doubling on "In God We Trust", the date and "Liberty" as well.

  • It is currently woefully "underappreciated", in my opinion. I buy them whenever I can get them at a reasonable (sometimes not so reasonable) price.

Grade/appearance does still matter, or at least it does for me. However, they are often very scuffy so MS64 is a decent grade for them.

Ikes are out of my area, I am not familiar with the peg-leg variety. Can someone explain what this looks like?

Hey Supercoin: while you're answering LanLord's question, Ive got one for you too.
What percentage of these are peg legs? I've found about 2%, but my sample size
is too small for me to trust.

  • 2% business strike 71-S? That's far higher than I've found.

The 71-S proofs also come in both normal and pegleg variety, and the peglegs are readily found there.

"Peg leg" refers to the R in LIBERTY, the bottom left serif is missing.

For a real-life example, look at a 72-S proof (always pegleg) and a 73-S proof (always has a serif).
  • Here's a photo. There are a couple of sub-varieties of peglegs too, or at least varying degrees of pegleggedness. image
