Type 1 and Type 2 Kennedy Halfs?

How do I tell the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 proof Kennedy Halfs? Is the difference for each year always the shape of the "S"? Does Type 2 always have a larger "S"?

What book should have I read to get an answer to this one?

79 type 2 half has a clear S if that what your asking...dont really follow kennedys but if theres a type 2 for 1981 it has a wierd san serif bend and is not just "clear" s.

    MikeB,

The 79 type 1 had almost a blob for a mint mark. When the mint mark punch broke (mms-002) it was replaced by a clearer S with a round upper serif and straight lower serif (mms-003). The type 1 1981 was punched with the same MM punch (mms-003). Toward the end of production in 81, it broke and was replaced with a much clearer S with ball upper and lower serifs much more like the current MM (mms-004). I hope this helps, and credit to Dr.Wiles.

  • The mintmark varieties apply to all proof denominations of those years.

Look in your Red Book under SBA dollars, there are good photos there.
