Storing Rolls

I recently came into acquisition of some Quarter and Penny Rolls, some old, some new. What would be the best way to store these rolls? I'd like to open them 10 or 20 years down the road and have them look just as new then as they do today.

  • I use old army ammo boxes. I have a couple packed with dessicant and have had them in the basement for a few years. Whenever I check them there is NO sign that any moisture has ever gotten in them. They have a really good seal. the coins look the same as when I put them in.

You know, Dangerous, that is a thought I never had. I have one at home but have access to many...hmmmm.

I plan on collecting a few rolls too. Maybe this would be a good way to store them, most ammo boxes have two handles on them for heavy carry too, so the durability sounds logical.

  • Ray I figure that if they are made to keep the powder dry in all conditions they will work great for some coins.image

I don't have anything like that :-) Althought I do have some camping stuff that looks similar to ammo boxes. I also thought about another item, "Dry Silica" (sp?) to keep the moisture out. Has anyone tried it?

I agree you can't go wrong with ammo boxes. I have had rolls of new Lincoln cents (without any silica gel) in some ammo boxes for 22 years without any change whatsoever. The ammo boxes have been with me through different moves, also, including some very hot and humid climate conditions (stored outside). No damage, no problems. But I think silica gel or some other kind of dessicant is a good idea.

PS: I also store ammo in ammo boxes. No problems there either.

Before placing them in ammo boxes, I would put them in square coin tubes (these usually are a little wider and longer than standard tubes so that you can leave the bank/mint wrappers on). Link to Square Tubes

Steve, I bookmarked the site and will check them out when I get a chance.

  • Copper pennies stored in foil wrapping stay super bright and original for many years. I have purchased some old rolls stored in foil and they are amazing. I now do this to all my cent rolls. You can then put the foil rolls in platic tubes or paper wrappers. The foil keep most if not all air and moisture out.
