  • Not being real good at the toning question, my gut told me that the splotchy obverse toning might be suspect, though the reverse looks nice. As for grade - looks to be a 64/65 to me. Don't know if it would make FB by virtue of the middle bands looking a little weak in the center - though it could be just the pic.

From the scan, the toning looks ok to me. I can't grade Mercs though, so I won't offer a grade. Besides, it's too hard to grade a potential unc from a scan.

If the picture is accurate the toning (corrosion) looks pretty bad along the rim area and even looks like some of it has peeled off.

What is the round impression on the face next to the eye, is that from strike or something else? As well as the similar round mark on the reverse above the lower band.

The reverse also seems to have several small to medium scratches most notable the X shaped scratch in the field next to the N in united.

From the picture I'd say AT. The color is not real uniform but it jumps around from blueish to purple to orange (in the leaves). BUT...the question is, do you like it? I think it's ugly but that is just my opinion. image

  • no expert here but toning looks ok to me. To bad it has that nasty little rim ding at 11:00 obv....a few minor scratches.Do you think the tiny spot in the center of the middle band would keep it from getting a FB designation? Nice dime IMO. Of course i'm a little partial to mercs. I'd say...hmmm... 64 or so. BTW how much did you give for it,if you don't mind me asking?... Pat

Looks original to me-too uneven to be AT.

I,ll say NT.That green toneing is hard to duplicate.
    Grade,I,ll say AU58.
    Hows that.

The toning looks good to me I just sold a NGC ms68 mercury with very similar toning but I would have to say it grades au58. Very nice. mike

I'm not experienced enough to say if it's real or AT, but it does look a bit blotchy.

I personally do not care for that kind of toning at all, but to each his own. As darktone mentioned, there are MS68 and other supergrade coins with similar toning. I dislike it, but darktone's ID suggests a preference for darker toning. Different strokes for different folks. I guess if everybody liked the same thing, we'd all be fighting over a small handful of coins, and the rest would lie around unappreciated, right? image

Grade? Again, hard for me to guess. I'll go with the AU58 consensus, though I didn't notice any rub. Could be MS, I suppose. But I'm not confident enough of that to go against the popular opinion.

I kinda like it image Probably ms/63, or au/58. Tough to tell if it's soft hair, or rub. Looks FB to me, and appealing. Let us know if you slab it, or what you think the grade is. image

close call. i give it 2/3 chance of being the real deal, 1/3 artful toning. ms-62 otherwise, as there is obvious fricition on the high points of the rev. - not circulation, just holder friction.

    this assumes consisntent 'wheels

The opinions are consistent with what I feel about this dime also. Grade wise it could go anywhere from AU58 to 65FB just depending on what light the graders see it in. Bought the dime just because of the somewhat different tone pattern from the normal Merc. This dime was on Ebay a month or so ago and at that time I would not bid as I was sure it was AT'ed. Seeing it in person changed the mind. Have added a couple of clearer pictures of the coin.

Thanks for the opinions. Any others would be appreciated.
  • much better pics.the close up of the bands clearly shows that what I thought was a break in the middle band is accually a break in the toning. Now I will say 64FB but I'm usually a point or so low. Hey !! maybe I should apply for a position at our favorite grading service !...image ... Pat

PS. in my first guess I also mistook a wave in the mylar as a rim ding.... oops...image

MS64 FB. The tone is unusual and kinda pretty. I think it got that way from an album so I call it real but it's anybody's guess what PCGS would call it. Really doesn't look like the "standard" Merc.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • It looks good to me and worth a shot.

I still think it's AT. image But.....

To check on it's "AU" status is only something you can do. You have to see it in person. If not AU then it's probably a 64 unless you see some hairlining...

The color and pattern of the toning look natural enough to me; in fact, I kind of like this dime. I just wonder why the obverse center is devoid of toning, and what makes the toning seem to flake off? I've never seen that before. As for a grade, I can't tell if the obverse is a bit more weakly struck, or is it slightly worn? Probably MS 64, or AU58.
