I got another 1835 dime and this one shows some repunching on the date and the upper and lower part of the five is connected together. Can anyone idetify the variety? thanks Mike
Larry, I was just looking over the shield area closely and I noticed the horizontel lines in the shield appear to extend into the eagles wing feathers. I can see one line from the reverse picture I posted protruding through the shield into the eagles left wing. mike
I just noticed the vertical shield lines cross over into the horizontal shield lines so I looked at the Heritage archives for a match and I found one! the reverse die of a proof! It even has the die break from the last arrow to the rim! Well I should not get too excited because they most likely used the proof dies on the business strikes also and this could be a common variety but it was neat to find the reverse die. here's a picture of the shield on my coin.
dorkkarl- thanks for looking at it. I guess I was thinking more of an AU grade on it maybe AU53-55? I have one graded pcgs au58 and this one has just a tad bit more wear. mike
I would think you'll get an au out of that one. The reverse doesn't help, but if the luster is there, should be no problem. No idea on the variety, sorry.
hey mike, couldn't really argue w/ au on this one. it looked like not enough luster in the digipic, but if your seeing good 'wheels, than au all the way, buddy.
Sorry I can't give you the variety on this one. I don't have a good reference book on the Bust dimes. The verticle shield lines extending into the horizontal lines is something you'll find on the majority of these early dimes, including the seated dimes. You'll also find the horizontal lines extending into the feathers on some of them. Davis, Logan Bust Dime Book In case you're interested, here's the best reference book on the Bust Dimes available. The price is $50.
I have the book on early dimes. I looked thru the 1835'3 but did not see any mention of the shield. If you could put up a pic of the obv and rev that shows everything good I will be happy to try and find what variety you have, if you want me to.
Thanks Ray, that looks like a good book. I keep meaning to buy some books on bust coins but I always seem to buy a coin instead.
Jon, thanks for your offer to help any area in particular I should take a close up picture of? Also did you see the three links to pictures at the top of this thread? mike
Here it is as I see it in the book on early dimes.
Obv is 2 - Fancy 8, 3 is large and low, 5 has curved top.
Rev is D - Scroll begins at left serif of D in united, scroll ends at middle of M in America. And I in banner is almost directly centered under second T in states.
This is JR4. R2. Fairly common can be found in grades VF and above.
Your coin is a nice one. Hope I have been of help.
Russ Logan was an incredible scholar and such a great person overall. i met him numerous times. it is just so sad he passed away way too young. he made great contributions to numismatic research, and the hobby could use a lot more people like him these days. thanks for the great thread!
