Just bought 2 unopened GSA Morgans

from a boardmember. I'm going to keep them unopened and see if they increase in value in the future.

  • You're a better man than I, Susan. image If I ever bought unopened GSA's (or unopened anything), they wouldn't stay that way for long. I just have to know. image
  • Boy, I wish I had the will power to keep them unopened.image

Not possible to x-ray them and find out what date and mint is inside?
  • Don't know, but I'd sure like to hear the answer to that one if a boardmember knows image

  • Well Susan:

If it's any consolation, I got one this week and it turned out to be an eh-ok 1884CC -- but you never know! image

How do the GSA dollars come packaged? I guess I have never seen an unopened one. Mark.

They come in a plain cardboard box, not that much different (other than color/texture) from the 2002 mint sets.

You could poke a pin sized hole in the box somewhere and use one of those mini lighted camera things doctors use to look inside veins.

Don't worry gsaguy, I've got a lot of resolve and determination not to open them image I bought a Canadian coin over a year ago, and with much
persuasion, cajoling, enticement, etc, the Darkside guys were not able to convince me to open it. They used such persuading lines as "What if it's a rare die variety", but I still haven't opened it!

  • Hi Susan: I'm with you! After returning a pile of 2002 mint sets to the Mint, I have decided not to open the replacements for the next 20 years!

I had the same problem with a few original rolls of 72 lincolns. It took me a few years but I finally looked at them and all I had when I was done was alot of worthless pennies. image mike

Why even have them if you're not going to see what it is you've got? That's not collecting coins.. that's collecting unopened boxes. If you don't want to appreciate the coins inside, then feel free to send them to somebody who will. I'll pm you my address. image

Luvdawg I think there is a yahoo group that collects boxes you might want to check them out. image

  • Susan, I recently purchased 10 unopened 1961 proof sets, and swore up and down that I wouldn't open them. Shortly afterwards MADNESS set in and I opened every single one of them! Oh well, I did have a few nice cameo's in the bunch. You are no doubt much stronger willed than myself. image

I have had a couple of original unopened bank wrapped 1955-P cent rolls. I have not opened any of them in 35 years. I paid $1.50 each back in 1968.

In addition I bought some more of them at prices exceeding $90 each. I needed to get my cost basis increased on them. image

I am not opening any of them.

    Nothing at all......

They stay this way for at least another 20 years. Quite frankly I doubt if there are any in the rolls.

    I already have 7 1955 DDO cents.

  • I would be tempted myself to open the boxes, but since she paid a "fortune" and the odds
are way against her(the vast majority of them are 1882, 1883 or 1884) in ms62 or ms63 anyway.
She paid more than ms65 money for these.

    Susan,

If you want to know what the date are, just as the guy who sold it them to you. The mint provided a receipt showing the dates of the coins purchased. (I have six black-box CC morgans along with the original receipt from the mint.)

What good is a coin you can't look at? If that's accurate about the mint providing a receipt, I can't imagine more than a few of the rare dates floating around in an un-opened box!

If you plan on re-selling them, you could probably get more for them unopened. But if they are yours to keep, I would recommend opening them so that you at least know what you have. MOO image
