Got my silver proof sets today

We went over to the local coin shop for our monthly abuse from the owner. Anyway, I went through 15
sets to find 5 I liked. Of course we had to argue about "that is not a flaw, it's on the case.", "It must
be terrible to have your mind going so soon"
. The other customers were watching this show and I think
they were expecting blows to start flying. Of course, he always gets the last word when he hands me the
bill. image

  • Atleast you got to pick yours out of 15 sets. A lot better than having to send all five back to the mint and go through all that hassle!

  • I'm still waiting for (1) set that was sent back to be replaced. The Dime had a green haze all over it and the SAC had a big black spot on her. Do you think I will get a better set or one in the same shape? I read that the Mint was using a different cleaning solution and this is the cause for the green haze on the silver proof sets. I don't know the cause of the black spot on the SAC. What do you think?image

  • I went through 50 2002 silver sets today at the local shop and did not leave with one set. He doesn't mind me mixing the state quarter sets from other sets to match with the regular issues, I just couldn't find one that did it for me I guess. I wanted one set where the Kennedy had suberb frost and mirrors(which was all of about 4 sets) and a nice Lincoln, all of the Lincolns appeared to have light haze around the obverse rims. I also noticed that many of the State quarters had brilliant spots where there frosting missing and the Indiana quarter was particularly bad, the nose of the race car was nicked up in several sets and frost missing there on most of the others.

The quality of the frost and mirrors on the sets from 1990-present is lacking IMO, despite most of the coins grading PR68 or PR69 DCAM, they don't have the look that the modern proofs from 1978-1989 do.
