Classic Coin Prices?

HigashiyamaHigashiyama Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭✭✭
Has there been a major uptick in classic coin prices, especially the early series, over the past 1 - 2 months? I've noticed that very reputable internet dealers (such as David Lawrence) are asking substantially more than they would have a few months back, often well above PCGS trends. On many issues, prices seem 25 % or more higher now than they did a few months earlier.

At the same time, there seems to be attractive material available. Has the market corrected to a point where better prices are bringing some better coins to the market?

I think some pricing is on a definite upswing. Not everything, but quite a few series. I've noticed a similar trend.
I'm not sure if it would be enough to bring the better coins out, although I'm not sure they actually went away image The prices realized for some coins at the latest auctions were pretty strong.

  • Standing Liberty Quarters in MS63-65 are way up in this weeks Bluesheet. Bought a 1930-S MS-65 FH last week at bid of $450, new issue came out and bid is now $540. That series has been in the doldrums due to an unhealthy lack of strictly nice pieces. I chalk that up very sloppy grading standards which put AU's in MS-64 holders and to the coin doctors who mess with them in every possible way. The market was throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Truly nice pieces have been undervalued in my opinion, glad to see them coming back to life.

Jon: You're right. I purchased the 24(P) SLQ last week in PCGS-MS67FH for a customer (pop 6/0). Cost was far less than many pop 6/0 Wash quarters sell for!! Figure that! image Wondercoin

Nice classic coins have been bringing over grey sheet for at least 8 months now, if you can find them. The blue sheet is a joke. They could show pluses every week on every type coin for the next year and not be up to the levels that decent coins trade at. I pay no attention to pluses on blue sheet. If your coin is a gift in the holder....then consult the blue sheet. If it's a real dog....they don't have a sheet for that yet though even the dogs are catching up to blue sheet now. The grey sheet suffers from this same disease and I get a kick each week when they plus the type 1 proof Buffalo and proof war nickels in PF65. These are the only high grade type coins that seem to go up consistently. Just a few months ago CDN lowered the price on MS65 no motto quarters. I guess a roll of those must have hit the market to drop the price!image Grey sheet has no idea where
real nice classic coins are trading at. Your apt to find more minuses in the MS/PF type coin columns than plu signs. I suspect the sale of one very average type coin is all it takes for the editors to drop the price. Yet their pricing is supposed to be for solid coins with eye appeal. For example, go out and try to find a real MS64 no drapery quarter for $6500-7200. I'd happily pay $10,000 for a truly decent one. I've never seen a 64 with good field luster. Most are impaired to some degree. Trading levels at shows and auctions are the real source of pricing info. Grey sheet is almost becoming like the blue sheet used to be...a sheet for average coins. If you have a real nice coin, you may have to go elsewhere for pricing info.
