What do you think it would grade? Is it original?

I'd call it VF20-ish. Original? Dunno. I'm terrible at judging that from pictures. Looks OK to me.

    I was thinking VF-25.

Not me. My first impression was F15. But it has too much obverse hair detail for a Fine. The reverse feather detail is not quite strong enough to merit choice VF, in my opinion, but I think the coin slides by as a VF20. I assume the pinkish coloration is a trick of the light in the picture.

Nevertheless, I like the Bust coinage in these grades. They have an aura about them, if you know what I mean. Character.

  • Looks like a VF but I would say it is not original but its hard to tell if it has been cleaned or dipped.

I'd say VF harshly cleaned and retoned. The scratches in the field to me are too many.

    LM,

Exactly my feeling. I'm drawn to this coin for some reason. It's almost like it's reaching out, talking to me, trying to tell me it's history.image

    nwcs,

You don't think the scratches might not just be from banging around in a coin purse, or somebody's pocket way back when?

It could be. My mom has a similar half, though obviously polished. I can enjoy the history even with the alterations that may have happened. After all, it was in people's pockets before someone might have altered it...

35-40 by redbook standards. The date is good the bust a little worn. The clasp looks ok and the hair curl above the clasp looks ok.

I like it. Doesen't look like a typical cleaned reject at least from the scan.

I'd sell it as an original, uncleaned Very Fine 35.

Well, I bought it. I just couldn't get it out of my head. It kept calling out to me in a plaintive voice begging to come and live with me.image Probably over-paid, but I don't care.

  • I was thinking VF-20 and pleasing. When the cleaned/uncleaned nature is clearly non-conclusive, go ahead and enjoy the coin. You wanted it after all!

Looks like a vf-20 per photograde.

Looks original from the scans to me. I think it's probably safe to submit. It does appear to have a slight green looking surface around the reverse lettering. Possibly need to neutralize it. Most Bust halves have been cleaned at some time or another and PCGS lets it slide if it isn't too darn obvious.

  • I'd give it a high-end VF grade. It looks like it has a bit of old cleaning, but nothing really harsh.
