Looking for advise on this Bust Dollar

Hi,

I was looking for advise on the following coin for my registry set. Do you think it is a good example, and will PCGS agree with the XF grade. Thanks in advance... Sorry but here is the ebay link. I have not figured out how to post it in my meassage, so you can click direct to it.

There must be a reason it's not slabbed. I would never spent that much on a raw coin.

  • Heres how I see it. Bust dollars are hot. If this coin was everthing he says he could wholesale it for his asking price (assuming he is correct with his greysheet data). With that said it is a very attractive coin but too expensive to make a mistake. The coin won't sell (my opinion, I could be wrong) wait until the auction ends, contact the dealer offer to pay his asking price plus all costs to send the coin to PCGS (if it makes the grade) renegotiate or pay his price if it comes back close to his grade. If it comes back No grade take a pass. PCGS grades cleaned bust dollars since most of them have been cleaned. If it no grades it was harshly cleaned or some other serious problem and you can wait for the next one.

I agree with gat. Without knowing the history of the coin there is too much risk that it's been repaired or has other problems. There has to be a reason for it being sold so far below bid and it not being slabed.

Wisconsin: When you open the "reply" window hit "HTTP" just above the typing area. Copy the address in the window that pops up...then name the link. Try it a couple of times...you can always edit your post.

This may be a raw coin but at least the seller gives a nice picture. That's almost as rare as the coin itself. lol

  • I have bought a couple of coins from this seller and they have been very close to his claimed grades. He does always have excellant pictures and most of his auctions get a lot of action. I've never seen him sell one this high priced though. I like agentjims idea - if I could afford it!

    Folks,

This coin looks very nice from the scan. I would say that the advertised grade is close; I prefer EF40 better, but his BIN price is at the EF40 level.

As for why this coin isn't slabbed, well, a lot of early dollars are not slabbed. This is a consignment coin, and the seller either don't care or don't have a say on slabbing the coin. Slabbing is considered by many collectors of earlier material to be a modern concept that they haven't gotten around to accepting.

Also, keep in mind that there is a return policy.

This coin is a BB-61. If I needed this variety, and if I trusted the seller (I haven't researched the seller, so I make no judgements whatsoever), then I'd buy this coin. The BIN price is not cheap, but it's not expensive either. The starting price is really low.

    IMO,
