Yeah, who could resist an auction from "hott_babe"! And since silver is in quotes, maybe it's a rare clad 64 JFK? I think I need to mention to her it's worth about 2 dollars...
  • dorkkarldorkkarl Posts: 12,691 ✭✭✭
i think is see the problem with her starting price. she's using the greysheet, which is reserved strictly for dealers.

btw, anyone remember "bigbootie"? would you ever buy a coin from someone with a big-bootie???

.....and she has so many other wonderful items on auction that it is difficult to comprehend? I just don't know which one to bid on first!?! hmmmm, maybe the Harley phone would be good for starters, yeah, that's it....
  • nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
The seller also has bought a lot of baywatch things...
  • I sent the seller this e-mail
People are making fun of your auction on the message board. Your coin is a common bullion 1964 Kennedy half generously worth $2.00. Thanks for a great laugh.
  • nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I sent her a similar message and then pointed her to resources like redbook and numismedia for prices and grades. I was very polite and considerate (seriously) in my email.
  • You embarrased yourself nwcs. You should have checked the "ME" link. Sellers name is Jakob, you just put the move on a dude.

I had to send the seller a message also. Somebody should contact ebay and complain about deceptive advertising.

    << <i>ITS ESTIMATED VALUE WHEN I HAD CHECKED 3 YEARS AGO WAS $ 2,400 - $2,700 >>

I wonder where he got that from? Hey, have you guys noticed that invariably the REALLY STUPID SELLERS TYPE EVERYTHING IN CAPS?

<< <i>btw, anyone remember "bigbootie"? would you ever buy a coin from someone with a big-bootie??? >>

    Karl,

Not only would I buy from him, I have. It was the best group of 10 sealed 1964 sets I've ever gotten off eBay; four each cameo'd halves, quarters, and dimes.

    Dropped him an eMail also:

<< <i>You're really just having a little fun with this, right? If you actually think the coin is worth this much, I have 71 rolls of exactly the same thing that I'd be happy to sell to you...Russ >>

We need to use Occam's Razor on this. If the seller claims the coin was worth that much three years ago, he/she is probably right.

Yes, I think it's a sure giveaway! I wonder what personality trait causes this behavior? Like when some Americans go to foreign countries. Somehow they think that by yelling English the locals will understand them better!

Hey, Russ, I'd be interested in a roll or two of your 1964 halves... (in original mint rolls?) image

  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
    nwcs,

Yes, original mint rolls but, uh, er, they're in plastic tubes. But, uh, they've never been cherry picked. Uh, yeah, that's it!image

    Never, uh, never!

    I just got back 8 I cherried from a roll. 3 66's 3 65's and 2 64s. One of the 66s has a nice gold end-roll toning on obv.

Come on, guys, if it's from an estate you have to take the description at face value (not the coin). No questions asked!

Russ, did you not notice that this is the rare UN-Accented hair variety? I e-mailed her? (who's us?) to ask where she got her estimate from. Joe.

Ebay is so hard to file a complaint with, I finally stopped trying. Safeharbor should be alerted to this fraudulent auction.

  • i got almost the same reply as russ got. she said " do not email me again unless you buy, my grandfather is not a fool. we know what this coin is worth" whats up with this seller? she thinks we are trying to steal her coin.
  • UncleJoeUncleJoe Posts: 2,536 ✭✭✭
Is it possible that she really does't know?

Here is the response that I received for my estimate question: My grandfather had taken some of his coins to a dealer in NEW YORK . This information I have gotten from my grandmother. My grandfather had notes attached to his coins. He has passed on, just a year ago.

    Joe.
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
The attached notes must have gotten a little mixed up.

I think what makes it so valuable is because it's the rare scratched up variety.

It's hard to imagine the seller is willing to take a $2300 loss on such a hot item.

  • i think we are wearing her down, she has dropped the opening bid to 99.00 (with a reserve not met) i emailed this morning and said it was kind of rough and worth maybe 1.50 in silver content.
  • FlashFlash Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭
The bid is now at $105 with the reserve met. I hope it isn't really a legitimate bid! It appears to be a shill.

per shiro's suggestion, occam's razor requres a choice of the simplest between 2 possible explanations. here they are:

explanation #1: the seller possesses a level of stupidity beyond our comprehension, and caused him(?) to list an idiotic value on this coin

explanation #2: the seller possesses a level of genius beyond our comprehension , and allows him(?) to determine that someone else would possess a level of stupidity also beyond our comprehension and bid on this coin

i predict occam's razor will win out on this one

(btw, anyone remember "bigbootie"? would you ever buy a coin from someone with a big-bootie???)

I've bought a number of really nice coins from elliot (Big-bootie) and will continue to do so.
  • RELLARELLA Posts: 961 ✭✭✭
I bought a certified coin from bigbootie (PCGS MS64) once. Before it left my hands it was in a PCGS MS65 holder (150% profit but not too bad in $$$).

    RELLA

edited to say profit of 150% not 250% like I originally said.
