Counterfeit/altered coins

I was wondering how a grading service would handle it if someone submitted a coin with an altered mint mark or date. I would like to think that they would contact the authorities in order to prevent an unsuspecting buyer from being deceived. Are the grading services legally obliged to report suspected counterfeiters?

They just send it back to you ungraded.

My experience is they just send the coin back to you telling you the coin is counterfeit. I think it would be hard to go any furthur. By the time the coin gets to the person submitting it it has probably been around the block so many tomes it would be impossible to trace it back to the counterfeiter.
  • A coin I sent to ANACS for authentication was returned bodybagged as "unable to authenticate".
