    Pedigreed, yes

    If you plan on keeping it, I think it would be cool. If you plan on selling it, I wouldn't even consider buying it without a discount unless it was Eliasberg, Norweb, Bass, etc.

    The two processes are entirely different. One places a new label with your name, the other actually grades the coins.

  • I pedigeed and regraded a set of full head, standing liberty quarters. 7 coins upgraded including 4 keys. It was worth the cost.

    I currently have my full silver Washington quarter set at PCGS for the same service. I'll post results when I have them.

  • Mark, I recently sent in my Washington quarter set (1932-1964) for pedigree. I was then and still am in the no. 5 position. As you probably already know, if you are in the top 5 of your particular set registry, then you qualify to have your set pedigreed/reholdered free of charge with PCGS. When I sent my set in, I asked for 5 coins to be regraded. I had others I wished to send in for possible upgrades also, but I didn't have enough time to go through all of them, so I only sent in 5. Of the 5 I sent in, I only received one upgrade, but it was the best coin out of the bunch. My 1935-S in MS66 was upgraded to MS67! Needless to say, I was very happy!
    If and when you do send in your set for pedigree, make SURE that you send it insured, registered mail. And make sure you insure it for the full retail value of your set. It took about a month for me to get my set back in the pedigreed holders. Also make sure you send them a note specifying as to exactly how you would like the predigree name labels to read. As an example, mine says "Schiera Collection". You are limited to a certain no. of characters, so even if you put your first and last name, then "collection" after it, it will probably all fit. A good person to talk to at PCGS in Gail Keane. She is in charge of managing the PCGS Registry, and she should be able to answer any questions you may have pior to you sending off your set for pedigree. Good luck!

    For a cheap one Mark, I may. Your name would have more value than the coin.

    I was told by PCGS' customer service that when you send your set to them for pedigree that you will also need to send a printout of the website showing that your set is within the top 5. Even if your set may have slipped lower, as long as you made a printout while it was in the top 5 your set is still eligible.

  • Mark ;
    I had a set pedigreed , but didn't ask for any re-grades. Check with Gayle to see if your set is eligible for pedigree , as not all sets are. For example , MS Silver Eagles and proof Sacs are not. You're allowed 22 letters ( including spaces and any punctuation ) and also included in this 22 space limitation , is any designation on the coin ; ie , the wide rim designation on the MS SBA's. Definitely send it registered , insured for replacement value , and include a printout of the current finest sets , showing yours is in the top 5. At the top of the submission page , state that this set is in for pedigree , and print EXACTLY how you want your name or collection labeled. The gentleman from PCGS that did my set , phoned me on a Friday evening , to ensure that we were agreed on how my set name was to read , to save any complications down the road. Super customer service , I thought. Good Luck !! I think it's something neat to pass on to the rest of the family.

    I just recently sent a 50-piece Classic Silver Commemorative Set in the be pedigreed. While it was at PCGS I had 12 of the coins regraded. Three out of twelve upgraded, so the about a $400 to $500 increase made it worth doing. Instead of naming my commemorative set in my name I have used a local Missouri site called "Overland Trail". I thought it would make a suitable name for a set of historically related coins. I really didn't want to put my name on the coins as I don't think anyone else would want my name on their coins if I ever had to sell them. I think the geographical name does give the set a cohesiveness and a new owner would not mind the name that I have chosen. The set can be seen using the links below.
