Instead of Classics against Moderns, it should be Circulation coinage against loser proofs.

Loser Proof's is this a new term or did I miss something ? Do not collect Proof's but sure cannot see how they would be called losers.

Would love to flame you but figured I should understand your Thread first.:

  • Personally, I like collecting Circ coins more, because Proofs are struck perfectly, and are meant to be in perfect shape, but I don't have anything against Proof coins or those who collect them.

Once Russ and some other guys see this thread, you might want to put your flame suit on!image

Braddick, proof coins are losers, circulation coins are not. That is the point I was trying to stir up trouble with, Uh, I mean trying to make. Markimage

I would rather own any proof coin - in any condition - then be stuck with the second ugliest coin produced in US history, the Sac.

  • it can be both. whatever "it" is. in the case of ikes, circulation strikes are so hard to find in gradable condition that proofs are your only shot at making 69 s out of one. granted the chase for high grade circulation coins is exciting but very time consumming verses cracking out proof sets.

proof coins are struck explicitly for the numismatic elite. business strikes are for lowly plebeians. you circulated coin collectors are beneath me image

The highest price paid for a coin to date was a business strike.
So I guess the buyer must be beneath you crito image

Collect what you like and to heck with what someone else thinks.

Yes proofs are beautiful. So are the Sport's Illustrated Swimsuit models, but I am never going to get with them. They are look only, no touch!

Proofs are the same way. Nope, I like my coins, beaten down by life, worn, used to buy motor oil, or wool socks or anything that meant something to someone. I like them with a few little nicks and ticks, imperfections and dirt that says I was spent, used and saw the seedier parts of humankind (edited for accuracy).

OK so I am a bit dramatic. Problem with proofs is that they are so perfect one just wants to rub them over and over. Kind of like that compulsion one feels to just squeeze a cute little baby's cheek.

yes placid, this is true. You neglected to mention it was carolj that bought it though... and we all know she has no class image

Russ, I thought that pathetic bird on the back of your Kennedys was full-grown??
  • mdwoods.... This one caught my eye especially with the coins I have been looking at lately. I have seen so many circulated coins going for an incredible amount of money compared to their proof counterparts. I've collected mostly proofs but these "MS Wonders" have me wondering.

  • ARCO,
I have never heard the word "humanhood" before.
I see the fellows that publish the Websters Dictionary haven't either.

Caught in my nonsensical ramblings. Webster, Deleted it from their 1958 version as it meant nothing, and was utter nonsenseimage
