Home U.S. Coin Forum

Are there enough forums for everyone?

Should we have even more specific forums.?Sometimes I think(we) should.
The US Coins forum moves really fast and some threads get buried quickly.
Its been suggested before.Just thought I,d bring up the idea again.
Suggested new forums.Newbie Nook,Classics,Moderns,Gold,Errors/Varieties.

  • I've always thought a newbie forum would be helpful, both for new collectors, and for us older folks to share what we have learned image I also like the idea of separate forums for gold and classics.
  • Do you really think many of the forum veterans would look in on the newbies very much?

When I entered my doctoral program, the unofficial word from the older students was to keep your mouth shut for the first semester. It took that long for most of us to get a handle, not just on the material but also on the way the seminar participants treated one another. One can often predict exactly what is going to happen as soon as a FAQ gets asked ("I found a 1940 nickel in the backyard. It looks pretty good to be so old. How do I get this black stuff off of it? Is it worth anything?"). You know people are going to start in with the wire brushes and the silver polish. And yet I would feel kind of bad saying, "Shut up and listen a while, you might learn something" to a newbie, even though you know full well that is what they need to do. Otherwise they might say something really bad, get offended with the response, and turn into a troll.

That's why I am so quiet most of the time.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
  • In another thread, cladking suggested the idea of a special troll forum. We would all be required to go there and feed them from time to time so they would stay put.image

    I like that idea.

Sounds like a good idea to me. If nothing else set up the newbie forum with 2 or three informative threads that are locked at the top. So a newbie who stumbles on the forum will get some common questions answered with the first couple of threads.

I for one would check in on the newbie forum. I think we could get others to commit to regularly check in on the kids, so to speak!!image

  • I would try to check on them every so often. But I think a comparison to a doctoral program is something of a red herring, as the newbie forum would be more like grammar school, where the 6th graders would keep the 5th graders in line, and so on. I like the troll forum idea, but you know the nature of being a troll requires you to invade peaceful places and wreak havoc!

The FuseTalk 3.0 license allows 25 forums (see FuseTalk link at bottom of page). To add forums, CU would have to eliminate some existing programs or license more copies of the program.

We could add a finger (print) forum.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!

    An excerpt from construct's message:

I've never thought inside jokes are appropriate when a newbie asks a question, especially when a coin could be damaged by the advice.
