PR-65 Liberty Seated Dime in Antique Green Holder: What does it grade today?

This slab is nearly older than many of the YNs on these boards: PR-65 1876 Seated Liberty Dime. Picture is small and reverse does not load, but I like its look. With reservations, of course, and not having the reverse to judge, the obverse sure looks like a CAM candidate. Early type proof is not my speciality; anyone else care go guess how this would regrade! (Fine print: And no, I am not bidding on this coin nor do I own it or have a financial stake in the outcome!) I just find it interesting this coin has never found its way into a newer holder, may have been off the market for many years -- or have a defect not shown...

  • The picture is too small to tell. My first gut reaction was CAM - but I'd have to see it up close. It sure looks pretty though!!

Looks like some pitting on the lower right between the date and motto.
Might just be the picture thou.
E-mail and ask if you can get a better picture of it and the back.
Times kind of short thou. They claim a 3 day return privledge.

it's hard to answer with no reverse. the side shown looks cameo though it appears to be broken around the top of the portrait and i wonder if that's toning or a scanner reflection by the date. looks like tone to me. i think it's a beautiful coin and a nice design as well. with some early coinage there isn't much of a premium on cameo.

i went back to the listing and read the description and checked feedback. the seller states some toning and some cameo and with 12K+ feedback and only 5 negatives i'd assume they describe accurately.

the photo tells me nothing other than this coin was certianly put in a very positive light i need to see this coin in person they are clever in their presentation that makes the uninformed think it is a steal and nothing wrong with that but that is just advertising and it might be a great coin and it might not

    but i have my doubts

and if that is an antique holder then i must have been around for several millennia................lol

but waht i really like is the babee doing the crazy dance across from the scanned coin!!

Here is my PR64 of an 1885 dime for comparison purposes:

By the way that does look like toning at around 3 o clock to 6 o clock. Like my coin (which you can enlarge the pics) it is hard to be sure if the coin is all there without personal inspection.

Michael is correct in his posting. We converse all the time in these grading issues. He knows his proofs real well!!!

That is not a first generation PCGS Holder. In my opinion, the coin is maxed out in grade and won't make cameo.

I am confused...I do not see where the seller said this was a first generation holder or any commentary that it is a really old holder?

By the way this holder looks to be from around 1993 or 1994? Conder101 knows all about this!

There is a possibility that this coin could be a winner (not full cameo) but the scan doen't help us for sure.

I did not check reasonableness of price.

robert that dime is superb i would send it in for waht i believe to be a 65 grade as the eye appeal is superb i would love to see this coin in person for me a 65 grade with 66/67 eye appeal

it is really becoming a raw coin market even with the slabs but that is good the serivces have really helped manym with waht i blieve to be able to grade coins in the 63 64 65b66 67 68 difference scale ands also have made many collectors really great at geading thier repspective series they specialize in and making super eye appealling coins really astand out i mean if you have an average looking solid for the grade coin in a 66 or 67 i bet a super eye appealiing hi end 65 coin is actually much better and worth more but the market has not progressed to this poijnt yet with regard to price well sometijmes it has but not overall i see it cominbn to this but to do that you will have to really know waht you are looking at and most all cant do this currentlyso i guess the market is here to stay like it is at least for now!

Funny discussion this. So much for grading consistancy or should I say "collectors belief in consistancy". image

    EDIT: Nice coin Oreville!
  • I wouldnt consider the coin to be a full CAM. Ive found tho that 1876 is by far one of the easiest dates to find in cameo.
