Need to send this buyer to RIF

I ran a couple auctions to get rid of some bullion. I clearly stated what
payment I accept, money order check, certified check. The auction ended last night and this morning I received a notice from the buyer that they had paid me with paypal. I don't have a paypal account, I don't want a paypal account. Now the question - Should refuse his payment method and send him a copy of 'hooked on phonics' or should I register on paypal and have them cut me a check? Are there fees associated with this?

Thanks,
Scott M

While I'm all for trying to accommodate buyers, I would not sign up for a Paypal account under these circumstances.

Just tell the buyer you don't have a paypal account, therefore he will have to make other arrangements to get payment to you.

Here's the scary part - if he said he already paid you, where did the money go? Are you forced to register to get the money?

  • How could he send money to an unregistered paypal? It won't appear once you register! He most likely never sent it or is mixed up with another lot he recently bought.

You would be foolish to sign up for paypal under these circumstances. Wait for good funds of your choice to clear and then ship.

You can send money to anyone with an email address with PayPal. That is how the store I worked for ended up with an account, to get the money out. I would just tell them you have no account, so they will have to pay with an alternative method. Although everyone here thinks PP is a crown jewel, even if you signed up, it would take at least two to three weeks to see any money, and if they used a CC, it would take longer and PP would take a portion.

Obviously, he new you didn't take PayPal. He also new that PayPal will let you send a payment to any email address regardless of whether you have an account with them. I would send him an email thanking him for attempting to make a quick payment, but I would tell him to cancel it and send payment in one of the forms required in the auction info. And yes, PayPal will charge you for accepting the money if you choose to do so.

    Not everyone.

  • Thanks for the input everyone. I sent him an email (polite but firm) stating the payment terms in the auction
and am awaiting his reply. I'd hate to get a neg for such a minor issue but so be it if he wants to go that
    route.

  • i love paypal btw. but if the buyer has a paypal account whenever he opens his paypal window it shows all the auctions that he has won and asks if you want to pay them now. if you click yes you simply go down the line and pay everybody. since most people take paypal it is an easy mistake to make. i have done that myself. we receive palpay frequently. they take 1.5 % of the money but we transfer directly into our account within 3 days. if you chose not to join paypal just email the guy and let him send you a check or mo. with paypal you dont have to wait 5 to 10 days to see if the buyer is going to pay you. it happens the same day.
  • We got it straightened out and he cancelled the paypal and is sending a check. Thanks again.

  • There is another option if you choose to. Some sellers request the buyer to pay the Paypal fee. I don't do this but I know several sellers that do. The thing I like about Paypal is your money is there in a instant!! No waiting for a check to clear.
