Broken Holders - How Bad is Bad?

I have a couple of NGC and PCGS holders that are cracked, crazed or chipped on the corners. The holders have served well to protect the coins which all still look great despite the obvious mistreatment. My question is what are the guidelines for getting a coin reholdered and does this involve a regrade or not? I have no experience in this area and would appreciate your input. Have you experienced any problems when reholdering?

If it's possible for another coin to be slipped in, they might not reholder it.

RLinn - PCGS charges $5 for reholders and NGC charges $4, at least according to the most recent fee schedules I have from each. It is completely seperate from a regrade.

Alas, I sent in a beautiful PR67 NGC Lincoln I'd had for a couple of eyars to be reholdered by NGC because it has a corner chipped off the slab. It came back and quickly developed discolorations.

The lesson from this sample of one: if the coin itself looks good, leave it alone. Bad things can happen when you send coins in to change holders.

I suppose it is somewhat like un-entombing a mummy. image You crack that slab and your coin will turn to dust. image

I had a PR66 `940 Washington arrive with the slab cracked clear in half. I could have put a different coin in. I sent it for re-holder, and they did as requested for the $5 fee (shipped with another order to avoid extra S/H/I fees.)

Thanks for the info. My coins are still secure in their holders so I guess I'm worried more about the mummy to dust thing Gilbert mentioned. At least now all of the fingerprints are on the outside of the holders.
