New Member, Mercury Dime Nut

I am a new member of this board. I hope to meet other Mercury Dime collectors I've been collecting Merc's since I was a kid with a paper route. It's still in my blood, but more serious now.
The only way I buy now is if they are in a PCGS holder. This is the best way to have half a chance in making a purchasing decision. It takes out the risk, however I have had my doubts with some purchases lately.

  • What's with the registry sets?
Isn't the 42/1 part of the set?
Some have the 42/1 and others don't even list it.

Owen - Welcome on board the Forum. You can learn a lot from the people here, but I warn you sometimes they will give blunt comments. It takes a little while to acclimate, but always keep in mind , that we all try to look out for each other here and generally manage to do it rather well. Good luck and be kind to every one you meet here. Bear

  • Hi Owen. Welcome to the boards and welcome to our world of Mercs.

If I'm not mistaken, the Merc registry was split up into the basic set (with no varieties) and the set with varieties. The set with varieties is the set that has the over dates and the Micro S.

If I'm mistaken, somebody please set me straight. image

  • I looked all over and couldn't see a variety section at this site.
I was considering the purchase of a 42/1-d to add to my collection.
Perhaps this is the wrong place to post a message regarding this item. It seems you guys would be interested in some discussion about why or why not to include a dime of this type in a conversation. Isn't it within the scope of Mercury collectors? I thought a full set was having all the dimes the mint made during the silver era. Is the 42/1 mishap considered a mistake, therefore not worthy. I forget now did the Whitman folder have room for these 2 dimes? Is this how it all started? Just kidding, I'm the new guy and really pushing my luck now.

    Owen:

Welcome aboard. The Merc Guys/Gals are the Most Friendly and Tight Knit bunch in the Registries and We always enjoy having a New Member. I am sure You will be able to teach Us somethings and maybe even We will be able to help you out also.

Drop in anytime as there is usually a Mercury Dime thread present at all times. Do Not be Shy just jump right in and say your piece.

By the way our Friend Spooly is a Good Guy as you will find out. Just ignore the Frown he inserted in the previous post or if you want just go ahead and Bash him. Either will work.

    Take Care.

    Owen,

Welcome to the group. If you spend some time here, you'll see the good, the bad, and the ugly. Mostly good, though. image The Merc guys and gals are good about answering questions or giving opinions about coins, and congratulate each other on our latest acquisitions. I think of Ken as the unofficial patriarch of the Merc collectors (image hope he's not offended), and Spooly is the Merc antagonist, referring to our treasures as "fishing lures"!!! I think he secretly likes them, and probably has some in his collection.

I didn't see your set registered yet, but it sounds like you're considering the varieties set. Best of luck with it, and visit us often.

Welcome, Owen. Nice having you with us. I have a complete set of mercs, minus the 16-D, all unslabbed. When I do get my 16-D some day, will definitely buy a slabbed one, because there's too much chance of getting a counterfeit with an unslabbed one in that date. Someday I'd like to have someone I can trust look over my mercs to see if they would be worthwhile slabbing.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as most of us do image

      Owen:

I echo the previous welcomes. Now, as a new participant, I think it we should immediately tell you how to have the most fun with Merc dimes. First, register your set. Then collect enough coins so that your set has a set rating of 24.25. This point total puts you 0.01 points ahead of Pat. Then remove a coin so you fall behind Pat. The next day add it back so you pass him. Do this repeatedly: one day subtract a coin and then the next day add it back so that every other day you are passing Pat. Pat LOVES to be passed and he will be SO happy by being passed every other day.....

    5. Thanks everyone for the favorable welcome.
It's great to feel at home amongst the big fish.
My lures are definitely getting costly.
I went to the Jacksonville show last March and come
home really broke. It's hard to say no to lures especially the shinny ones. I feel like a fish more often than not.

      Owen,

That coin looks like it is from David Lawrence. Their pics never show the luster well. And it looks to be partically toned. Call the 800 number and have it described to you.

      Jon

      P.S. Welcome by the way!

Welcome and congrats for joining one of the nuttiest bunch of hoodlooms around!

Some of the members should be taken seriously and others should be taken to the nuthouse!

Have fun with the whole thing and good collecting.

The image of the 42/1 appears to be a scan and it is very difficult to capture luster with the scanner. Light hazey toning really makes the luster appear "flat" but a blast white coin reflects too much.

Calling them is a great idea and I suggest you find out if the lower horizontal band near the olive branch is a strike imperfection or contact. Their appear to be a couple of marks or just tone on the upper bands that I would also question. I have a PCGS66FB that has a light scrape that I didn't see on the band and was dissapointing upon receipt.

My hunch is the luster is much better in person and the fields look pretty clean. The contact on the neck and possibly the cheek near the curls is probably what is reflected by the grade.

      Good luck!

      TC

PS Find out what their return policy is.
      TC
    13. Thanks for the comments. I've decided to send it back to the dealer. I would rather hold out and get a high luster coin. This coin has luster but the dark marks distract. Also the partial finger print is not a good thing. I appreciate the help in decision making. This message board is definitely a help and I hope someday I could contribute.

Welcome to the boards. I enjoy Mercury dimes, too. However I only have a few and I have not started a registry set. I do have an MS65 1945 Micro s (my favorite slabbed Merc so far).

    26. Thanks for all the positive comments.
I have some that need to be sent for slabbing.
I often worry about the postal service and the high rate of losing one.
Perhaps this is the main reason most collectors hesitate using a grading service.

    27. I have found the P.O. to be very reliable. There was a case where a board member helped the authorities nab a P.O. worker who was snagging non registered mail to PCGS. So insurance is a must...
