PCGS Upgrade submissions - new holder or not?

When sendind a PCGS slabbed coin back to PCGS for regrade, if the graders determines that it should not be upgraded, is the coin returned in the same holder or is it cracked and returned in a new holder? NGC automatically cracks the coin and puts it in a new holder regardless of whether it upgrades or not. The real reason for asking is I have regrade candidate (ok, I'm not holding my breath) that's in a holder that's probably 5 years old based on the serial number and I was wondering if it had been to PCGS recently of not - easy to tell with NGC but PCGS........????

Yes and no. Standard procedure is to crack it first. However, I know that they have done regrades without cracking the slab in the past.

The coins are cracked out and graded "blind" (hopefully not literaly). You will get a new holder and a new cert number.
