Kennedy graders - help with this one

DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
I just purchased this coin in a old label PCGS holder. It is a nice AH Kennedy. I believe it will upgrade substantially from it's current grade. It has a few milk spots that conservation will remove. Assume for the purpose of your estimate that the spots are gone and please give me your honest assesment of your grading opinion. Russ, you're disqualified since you already know the answer. I'll post its current grade in a little while. Thanks!

Don - I could not see the reverse, something wrong but if it matches the obverse I would grade PR-67DC . Bear What was the old grade PR 65DC with spots

If it's in an older holder, it could be a DCAM.image

    Thanks Bear and LW,

I fixed the link and added two marked-up pics to show the problem areas I am worried about. On the obverse there is a ding on the cheek (it looks like a feature), some shiny hairs, and light toning on the crease of the neck. On the reverse, you can see I boxed the milk spots. See pics below.

Don, I would be most concerned with the discoloration in the cheek, possibly some mark or rub un area that might be better after conservation. Also I share your concern about crease in neck area however I still say its DC and I would move grade between 66 and 67 after seeing reverse. Good luck. What was old grade.

Have you submitted coins to NCS yet? This might be a good one to get cleaned up.

    Hi Don,

I haven't graded ANY Kennedy half dollars since I left NGC 4+ years ago and I hate trying to grade from images. With those disclaimers out of the way - it looks like a PR67 DCAM to me.

Don - Please let us know the grading results on the coin and remind us of our own prognostications. Bear.

Mark - whether we are right or wrong, I am honored to be in the same ballpark with your grade evaluation.

Thanks Mark. I'll get a look at the real thing in a day or two, and I'm sure I'll get to see why PCGS graded it the way they did. Still, it sure looks good in the scans.
