Are those WTC MS-69 eagles really worth over 100$ ?

Are those WTC MS-69 eagles really worth over 100$ ? Sorry if this was discussed before.

Not trying to re-hash the death coin thing, but really trying to figure out if those PCGS ms69 WTC eagles are really worth over 100$.. I mean, besides them being from the WTC, they are only bullion eagles right?

I am just confused because I thought that PCGS slabbed a bunch of them and they were the ones that were recovered... I noticed a couple months ago that MS-69 eagles were appearing.... did people resubmit the original eagles for grading? where did the graded eagles come from?

  • They graded over a thousand of these WTC eagles alone in MS-69... it might be neat to have one in a registry set, but I'll wait until they're $50 or less. Those eagles shot up the number of 2001 eagles in MS-69 by a significant number... they are just bullion eagles found underneath one of the trade center buildings... I believe number 5... in a vault. They didn't just do the MS-69 grades, either. (see picture) They are not "rare" by any stretch of the imagination, and you're average american collecting the coin for a momento doesn't care if it's "MS-69" or "Brilliant Uncirculated" ... besides, the "brilliant uncirculated" coin I have is probably MS-68.

Despite all this, the closing price of these MS-69 wtc eagles has risen a good $20-30 in the past few weeks, to nearly the $130 to $150 level.

  • I've noticed that the prices have really increased. I got mine a few months ago on ebay for 59.95 buy it now option. At the prices they are going for now I should have picked up a few more, but isn't that always the case when prices go up. I have yet to see one at a show, curious to see what they go for on the floor.
  • I don't remember ever seeing them that low, unless they are the lower graded coins, or have a really low buyitnow option, which I have seen happen. I would buy one if I saw a cheap buyitnow option available somewhere.
  • There are currently 2 on ebay gem unc with a buy it now of 59.95.
  • I am talking about the ones graded "MS-69" that can be used for registry sets. About 1000 of these were graded MS-69. These coins have trended up to the $130 range and higher as of late. The "gem uncirculated" coins can be obtained for $50.

I've bought one for inclusion in my Registry. The "MS69's" also have a insert number on the back of the slab (the "Gem Uncirculated" ones don't).
It was a bit of a email struggle to get PCGS to allow me to add mine to a Registry. The insert number was real but don't recorded in their data base at first.

  • A coin is worth what someone is willing to pay, and they are certainly paying $100+ for them. I can buy a silver commemorative half or a couple 64FBL Franklins for the same money so for me the answer is no. Bob
