New pictures, Merc upgrade, & type set additions

CocoinutCocoinut Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
Like many others on the boards who photograph their coins, I'm always trying to improve my technique. I re-shot all of my Mercury dimes yesterday, and posted them this morning (along with an upgrade). It's a time-consuming process, but I think the latest pics are more true-to-life than the old ones. Any comments, suggestions, or criticisms are welcome.

It's hard to keep up the the leaders in the basic Merc set. As the saying goes: "The harder I try, the behinder I get."image I have an addition an another upgrade coming next week, but there's a huge gap between me at #5 and Dennis at #4. There are some challenging dates in this series, and the top guys are relentless in their quest for additions and upgrades. There's been a lot of red near the top of the Merc charts for the past couple of weeks.

The other set that I resurrected a few weeks ago is the 20th century no gold with varieties. I had the tougher coins, and just needed about a dozen modern issues. I've added all but one of them now, but I can't say I get much satisfaction out of owning them - they're just too readily available. The 1792-1964 copper, nickel, and silver set is my next goal (besides completing the Mercs), but I don't expect to ever finish that one. It's one of my favorite sets, though. Gotta love those 19th century types! image

I looked at qiite a few of your Mercs and since they all have that yellow and blue color I assume that they are white coins but you couldn't get the light to do right. I have found that getting the color of true toning correct or to get blast white coins to look right is almost impossible to do. It makes me appreciate how good Heritage does with their pics. Whitlow's dimes all look golden toned and their not. David Lawrence gets the color pretty good, but don't show the luster and/or brillience(sp).

Do you use sunlight or inside lighting? Someone told me that there is a bulb you can buy that gives off more of a natural light instead of the yellowish color I get using regular bulbs.

Looks like it is a really hard thing to do.

    Jon,

I use sunlight when taking pictures because I haven't found a good method using artificial light. I've tried the Reveal bulbs, but I'm not satisfied with the color when I use them (too much yellow or red). Most of my Mercs are white, but toning should be obvious on the '17-S, '19-P, '26-S, '29-P, '31-S, and '45-S. Some of the other older dates have just a touch of gold toning.

I put the slabs on a black background, but the camera makes automatic adjustments, and toned coins usually turn out a bit too dark. Some of the blue that you see could be a reflection from a shield that I use to block any direct sunlight from the coin. If I wasn't colorblind, I might try to color correct them, but I'd probably end up with green or purple pictures. image

        Jim,

I'm not sure being color blind is a good thing for a coin collector.

        Ken,

Did Jim's white coins have a lot of yellow and blue color or am I in the same boat as Jim with this color blind thing?

        Run'n scared, Jon
      2. Pictures are a tricky thing, I am still playing around with my camera, testing new ways to improve....lighting is surely the key. I use a 300Watt incandecent bulb....but I still think that can be improved on....
I think you should send me that 21d, 23s, and 26s...then you would not be worried about the spread between you and me...it would be with Tim...lol... just kiddin..image

        Jon:

        Yes they Did.

This question you just asked pertains to how pictures show on different peoples monitors and is something I have always thought about also. I see some of these posts that tell a guy his pictures look good and on my monitor the picture looks nothing like the coin possibly could in real life. Sometimes I'm guessing that My Pictures must really be Green or Purple with violent shades of Chartruse and Burnt Orange. Is this true ??

        Just wondering. image
