New Buffalo dollars??

Hello everyone. I am ask a question concerning the New Buffalo dollars.

1. How many years were they made and how many mint marks.(I understand UNC and Pr were made)

I was talking to a dealer the other day and he wanted to sell me 8 Buffs (2Pr & 2 Unc), for 1300.00, would this be right. All were slabbed PCGS MS69 and PR69. He stated he didn't have them in yet and would give me money off if I paid for them in advance. I said no thanks and left.

Thanks for the help everyone in advance.

They were made in 2001. Unc in Denver, Proof in Philly. Last I paid attention they were running a little over $100 each slabbed in MS69/PR69DCAM. THe price you were quoted is too high.

You could have bought them from the mint for $34. image
  • Thanks guys,

1300.00 I thought he was nuts too, and NOT have them to look at. Were they made in 2000 & 2001, does anyone know??

  • They were just made in 2001. Total mintage I believe was 500.000, but I don't know how many of each - does anyone have the final mintage figures?

  • I was thinking mintage was 75,000 , because they sure sold out quick !!

let me settle this as Im the one who lambasted everyone on these coins.

They were made in 2001 only. Denver struck uncirc peices for 2 coin set, single release, and for the C&C currency set. proofs for 2 coin set and single release. There were more proofs than uncirc, but total (all) was only 500,00. 50 thousand were C&C sets, and Im not sure of the rest of the breakdown.

C&C sets sold in 3 days, and whole mintage sold in 2 weeks. Last dollar was deliverd in may of this year image

I have instock 17 C&C, 1 proof, 2 uncirc, and 1 2 coin set left. All were bought coincidentially for just over 1300.

I seem to recall 50,000 uncs that were in the C&C sets, about 300,000 proofs and 150,000 uncs so that the grand total was around 300k proofs and 200k uncs. I was watching those numbers VERY CAREFULLY as explained below.........

The reason why I am not giving exact figures is that the US Mint never released the final breakdown figures for some screwy reason.

I was really gung ho on this issue and managed tio purchase 155 proofs and uncs directly from the US Mint at pre issue prices and still have them. I used no specail favors and somehow my orders got filled as requested. The two coin set which were part of the mix came out to less than $30 per coin and I kept the numbers down on those since I wanted to have an original case for each coin purchased.

I was not gung ho on the West Point issue and they still have not sold out.

By the way the PCGS PR69 buffalos have been selling at slightly more than $125 each on ebay as of late.

The prices do seem to be on the rise again.

By the way, I believe the best buy right now of those issues is the C&C set. They are selling for the same or even less than the unc. coin alone.

An interesting way to buy the C&C set is to buy the ones with the US Mint strapping tape still unopened on them.

Someday they will go for a huge premium since collectors love unopened packages.

and actually in coin world they posted the figures given, which arnt far off from orvilles counts, but theyre were more proofs and less uncics...maybe 320k proofs to 180k uncircs which yes the entire run of C&C were 50k uncircs with stamps and the 5 dollar cheif onepappa whatever.

pontiacinf: Don't laugh just yet. It hasn't happened yet.

Just because I think that it will happen is no assurance that it will happen soon enough.

I saved and saved unopened shotgun bank wrapped rolls for over 30 years in some dates and nothing happened between 1970 and 1998, price-wise relative to the tubed rolls.

I could not believe I would be wrong for so long! I held on thankfully, because I was not thinking in terms of profits but because I enjoyed the collecting of the different Federal Reserve Banks and branches and commercial and savings banks as well. Well between 1998 and 2002 prices have in some cases suddenly shot up to 2000% in some cases and even more in other cases.

It was not about the money....but a sense of vindication.
