Ok to cancel an auction because you sold an item?

In this eBay auction, the seller cancelled the auction because he or she sold the item out of his or her retail store while the auction was going on.

Linky

Is this acceptable?

BTW, any form of currency from Arizona is rare and desireable (this particular note should have sold for no less than $3000 image]. I'm a bit peeved....

Thanks for your opinions,

Charlie

I find it makes people who are interested in the coin really, really mad.I've made a rule not to do it. You have no idea who is looking at your auctions until it is over. I've only brocken the rule 3 times when someone has "Made me an offer I can't refuse."

Not once bid's are placed that meet the reserve if there is one in my opinion.
But it's not against any eBay rules that I am aware of.
  • There was no reserve in this particular auction and the winning bid was $860 with a max of $2100.

I've sent an email to eBay. We'll see how they respond.

According to Ebay rules, you can cancel an auction at any time prior to the end of the auction:
    Ending Early

of course, it's not something I would do.

It's allowable according to the rules but it's not acceptable to the bidders. At least the seller was honest and didn't use the famous "error in listing" excuse.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Ditto the Dog, but I just noticed with a cancelled auction that the bidding history is apparently fully disclosed -- i.e. the normally secret maximum bid is exposed?? That adds insult to injury to the stranded bidders.

Though it would be poetic justice if the seller saw that someone had a max bid twice what he sold it for locally. image

Without knowing the details of this note sale, I won't comment on the ethics of selling an item listed on Ebay. For all I know( and you too, probably) this could have been an accident that the note was sold in their store.
At least they were honest about it.
I bought one coin from this seller that I decided not to keep, an 1873CC Seated Quarter. I had no problem with returning the coin for a refund, and they refunded my postage and insurance too.

yes i believe reporting seller to ebay is in order as it violates their terms of selling items up for auction in a private sale

I had a bid on an item a few weeks agoi was the only bidder and watched the auction for 10 daysthe seller cancelled the listing on the last day so I question why.
The seller said someone made an offer and he sold it.
That's BS too, but really not much a buyer can do about it.

It's really annoying to me as a younger member to start reading a thread that seems interesting and getting ready to reply, and get halfway through before realizing it's over 2o years old 😑

Hey now, didn't you read the forum etiquette thread? Only happy talk from now on or you will be deemed as unfit for this new PC forum. ;)

The suggestions made in the “etiquette” thread you mentioned weren’t about being “PC” or only engaging in “happy talk”. I’m sure that your reading comprehension is much better than your above comment would indicate.
