I am pretty sure they are a consistant alloy (no clad). Never cut one open to look, maybe I will saw one open or shoot it or something to check.

Jom, a 5 lb sac weighs around 5 lbs, a 10 lb sac weighs around 10 lbs. Individually, they vary.

  • Actually the Sac is not a solid alloy, it is in fact a clad coin.

It has an interesting history of experimentation, they needed to match the weight and electromagnetic signature of the SBA dollar so that vending machines, subways, etc. that take the SBA dollar would not have to be retrofitted.

At the same time they had to meet the mandate of a golden color.

One of the first successful attempts had (if I remember right) a 5 layer clad composition. This was deemed too expensive to produce.

The current version is a more conventional three-layer clad. A pure copper core with copper alloy outer layers.
  • Thanks supercoin....image
3 layer clad..that would be....Manganese,Brass, and Copper. Found a web site.

  • Actually, it's Brass / Copper / Brass. Outer two layers are the same, and do have Manganese in them. I forget the exact composition.

  • Here you go... straight from the hoss' mouth...

US Mint's info on Sac Composition

Outer layers are 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel.
    Inner layer is 100% copper.
  • And yes, the coin you're holding in the photo is in fact one of these amazing and fabulously rare (only a few billion minted) coins. image What are we looking for?
  • OK....it's missing the reverse outer layer.......pure copper showing on reverse.
    thanks again supercoin.
What sucks is that it's kinda dinged up . Found it at work today. I count money for a living.

  • honeywah click on supercoins ebay ike auctions. he just sold a missing layer ike for 347.00. you might want to get it graded and slabbed before you put it on ebay, but it will probably go for several hundred as well.
  • Thanks guys......I appriciate the patients you have showed with my many many posts. Thanks again.

  • honeywah, from your photo, the reverse on your coin looks normal, other than some weakness in the lettering along the top of the rim. Does it look like copper in real life?

BTW, at $347 that Ike went cheap (at least I thought so) -- I lost money on it. I don't really have any idea about value of a similar error on a Sac. Come to think of it, I apparently don't have any idea on Ikes either. image

I don't know if Sacs would even be found with a similar error, I'm not sure how the layers are bonded.
  • doesnt sound normal.....doesnt weigh normal...the scan sucks. It really is a different color. Hard to tell from the scan. It's not the ugly tarnished look that they all seem to have. It's also thinner . It is the color of copper. anyway.....thanks again
