I just dug this up after not looking at it for a while. What would you grade it ? proof-like? It has die cracks all over it. Can anyone identify the variety? thanks mike
Neat coin. I'm no variety expert but that coin looks familiar!
Actually, I'm talking about that 'mark' just to the right and behind Ms. Liberty's eye. Check it out carefully. Is it a bagmark or is it actually raised...ie....a mark or flaw in the die? If it is a mark in the die, then it's a variety I've come across many times. And actually, that particular set of dies produced some great coins. Many of my best 84-CC exhibit this die flaw. I've also noticed that reverse is often grainy looking indicating something like a rusted die.
Man those are some cool cracks! It looks like a new die due to the cameo so I think it is probably at least semi-prooflike. I'll give it a 63 but if the marks on the face go any distance into the coin then it's 62 tops. There are at least 12 die pairs known for that model, most associated with doubled dates. Your scan is not large enough to attribute it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
The date unless it has doubling on the mintmakr than that narrows it down to 2. Or unless it has a die crack through the initial M and the #3 star on the left ha sa hook rather than a point on the bottom on obv and a die gouge through the E in STATES then it's VAM4.

Dog97-Here are some pictures of the date and mint mark. It appears to have some doubling to the left of the mm. The date looks to have some repunching on the base of the 1 and the first 8 on the lower loop has a type of doubling on both sides of the lower part of the 8. The die crack on the obverse completely circles the coin through the date stars and e pluribus unum through the last stars to the date with many other smaller die cracks on the obverse. The reverse die crack almost completely circles the periphery with minor die cracks on the rest. gsaguy-you are right that is a die flaw. mike
vamseeker- Yes that's it! well my next question is are they scarce or is this worth the same as any 84cc? I don't plan on selling it but if I did some day I want to make sure I don't give it away. thanks mike
Definitely looks like the III2-7 obverse, but I always like to confirm the reverse and verify that it is a documented marraige pair. On the obverse alone I would tend to agree with Vam 7.
That's a tough one. Really need to see the 1 in the date to tell for sure. Cross check it against these: 1 (Normal Die) Obverse III'l -Normal die of III' type. Reverse C' a -normal die of CI type with large V CC mint mark.
2 (Doubled 18 Top) Obverse III'2 -Doubled 18 in date. The 1 is a wide curved vertical spike above the top point and is doubled slightly above the bottom crossbar. The left outside of the loops of the first 8 are doubled. Some specimens show a thick die break through the bottom of the date digits. Reverse CI b -First C of mint mark is doubled on the left inside.
3 (Doubled 18 Left) Obverse III'3 -Doubled 18 in date. 1 doubled below top crossbar and to the left of bottom crossbar. The inside right of the top and bottom loops of the first 8 have die chips and right outside of upper loop is slightly doubled. Some specimens show a die break through the bottom of the date digits.
4 (Spiked Date) Obverse 111'4- There is a vertical spike of metal from the top of the 1 in the date. Some specimens show a horizontal spike to the left of the lower loop of the first 8. A thin die break line shows below the designer's initial M. The third star on the left has a hook at the bottom point due to a die chip. Reverse C' a -Some specimens show a horizontal die gouge through E in STATES.
5 (CC/CC) (177) Obverse 1lI'5 -Doubled 18 in date. 1 is doubled to left showing as horizontal lines from upper and lower crossbars. The first 8 is doubled at the top left side of both loops and the upper right side of lower loop. Date set further right than normal. Reverse CC -Mint mark doubled With first C doubled at top inside and bottom left outside and second C doubled at right inside.
6 (Doubled First 8) Obverse 111'6- First 8 is doubled on the right side of the lower loop and at top right outside of upper loop.
7 (Doubled 18 Bottom) Obverse 111'7 -Doubled 18 in date. 1 is doubled at bottom and a spike of metal extends to left from left side of the bottom crossbar. The first 8 is doubled strongly all along the bottom and on the bottom left of the upper loop.
8 (CC Tilted Left) Reverse C d -Large V CC mint mark tilted left.
9 (Dash Under 8) Obverse 111'8- Dash under second 8 in date.
10 (Far Date, CC Tilted Left) Obverse 1lI'9 -Date set further right than normal.
11 (Doubled18) (177) Obverse 1lI'10 -Doubled 18 in date. 1 doubled at top as a notch on left side of lower crossbar. First 8 doubled on top left outside of lower loop with die chips on right inside of both loops.
It looks like 7 or 8 but could be 5, 10, or 11 depending on the diagnostics of mainly the 1 in the date. There has been over 1,000 VAMs added since the book was printed with several hundred in the last year or so.

MM close up
Here's a closeup of the one:
And of the eight:
You can somewhat see the die crack in the above images. The crack is very visible, almost encircling the entire coin.
Compare yours to the images above. If it matches, I believe it is a VAM 7.
Notice the spike of metal at the bottom left of the one. I couldn't see your one very clearly in your image.

According to the Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars, it is listed as a:
Interest Factor I-3 "Significant die variety with general interest to variety collectors"
Rarity Scale R-4 "Very Scarce (Tens of Thousands)"
As with anything else, it's worth whatever someone would be willing to pay. If you get a really good offer, let me know!
I like it because it appears to be a relatively rare variety, it's in a GSA case, and it has a very significant die crack.
