Who would you send your gold to for grading??

Are any of the grading services more friendly than others on grading gold? Who would I get the fairest grade from? Sometimes it seems that the grading services try to outdo the other by seeing who can grade the lower.

Thanks
Ogden

  • I recently sent a douible eagle in for grading to PCGS and they came back with what I felt was a fair grade.

I'll ask it a little bit different. If it was your gold coin you were sending in, which service would you use?
If a service is notorious for low grades on gold coins I would just as well avoid them. Thanks to all you reply.

Good question. If it's friendly, then ACG or NTC come to mind.

If it's fair, then I think it may depend on which series. For example, if we're talking about early gold (Capped Bust design and earlier), then I don't think it matters much between NGC or PCGS (or even ANACS). For the other series, I haven't seen the product from the various services recently enough to say which will give you the fairest grade. I suspect, though, that most will recommend either PCGS or NGC and pretty much warn you away from the others.

    Ogden,

I was quite kidding about ACG and NTC. Do not mistake my bad humor and use them -- at least not because of my post!

  • My previous post still stands. I feel the grade PCGS gave my double eagle was based very fairly on the actual condition of the coin. I would not hesitate to send PCGS another gold coin to grade (if I ever buy a raw gold coin again).

Thanks all. I realize the kidding about ACG and NTC. I've seen enough to stay away from those folks.

    Thanks

  • This is a tad bit diferent, but since I am a novice, I like to send my "older" coins, including the gold ones to ANACS and ask them to "attribute."
I've learned a LOT about coins this way, and some of the coins that looked completely "plain" to me have come back with Breen Numbers that have turned out to be "very scrace." Even the ones that aren't "scrace" or "rare" teach me something new.

So, my input as a NOVICE is ANACS and you may discover some really interesting things about your coins.

    Bob,

I send my early dollars to NGC for their attribution service. NGC typically gets more respect than ANACS -- deserving or not is up to you to decide -- and may also offer attribution for your series.

If it's a no problem ms coin I would use PCGS. Ngc seems to be a little more forgiving but not much. ANACs seems to always be a grade point lower than PCGS for the exact same coin. Alot of people are shocked when I say that ANACS grades ms gold harder than PCGS but it is the truth in my experience. I have not had much experience in submitting circulated gold so I can't give you an opinion there.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'll send them into PCGS. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Ogden: What is your purpose of sending the coin to be graded. Are you selling? If so, then still depends because PCGS gets more money for the same grade as the other reputable services. On the other hand PCGS grades tougher so you may not get as high a grade.

If you are NOT selling, why send in the coin? It's a waste of money, IMO, unless you are going to sell it or do a registry.

  • Ogden,

As discussed on a previous thread, depending on the series of gold in question, there my be no premium placed on PCGS gold. I mainly collect double eagles, and my preference is NGC/PCGS and then ANACS/ICG. Personally, I think that PCGS is a little erratic on grading gold, but that is only my opinion.

all depends on the specific coin and the coin needs to be sight seen

and what you want to accomplish with it

in other words what are you hoping to accomplish with getting the coin in the holder

I bought some pieces yesterday at a coin show. They are a 1854 type II gold dollar and a 1861 Liberty, double eagle. I don't know how to grade and would like to have some sense of their value. I bought them to keep them but it's possible I would sell them one day. It would be nice to have an idea of their value, not only for me if I decided to sell, but for heirs. Thanks for all who replied.

I have a scan, but I cannot find a way to upload it to this site. If you give me your email address I'll email a copy to you.

If you want consistent grading try ANACS or NGC. I like ANACS slabs for varieties. If you like to gamble go with PCGS.
