Regrade Question

Quick Question... Let's say I get a coin back from PCGS and I do not agree with the grade. If I send it in for a regrade and specify a minimum grade and they feel it does not meet that standard, will they keep it slabbed in the original grade or just send the coin back without the slab? I want to keep it slabbed whether or not it achieves the upgrade. How should I denote this on the invoice?

-Thanks!

  • they charge you for the grading service and if it doesnt grade higher they leave it in the original holder. but do you really think they would dispute themselves and grade it higher?

Send the coin in as a regrade in the holder. Worst case scenerio is PCGS sends the coin back in a new holder with the same grade designation.
  • Should I specify the grade I believe it should be?

presleyh, ther are LOTS and LOTS of coins that PCGS grades higher (and thereby "dispute themselves") in the regrade process. I do believe you have a better chance of success at coin shows, though. Just a few examples I can speak of first hand - 1) a PR66 $3 regrading PR67; 2) a 1916 MS65 Standing Liberty Quarter regrading MS66FH: a 1921-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar regrading MS66. You can hopefully see, these are high value difference "disputes".
  • ...I'm sending in about 25 coins with that regrade... Maybe it will help :-)

May I suggest that you address the regrade separately, and YES, submit a documented argument as to why the coin should be such and such grade BUT contact PCGS first and let them know it is coming. If you don't separate the issues, it will probably go through the normal channels and your letter/argument discarded/lost as though it was never submitted.

Edited to add: But, please do not do this if you cannot articulate with specificity why the coin should be the particular grade (based on PCGS published standards)

Coinguy1: What do you think is the reason that your chances for upgrade are better at a show? Does it depend on the value of the coin?
  • Mabye if U keep the coin for a while as it is and send it in for regrade 5 years from now U can change your situations, if submitions slow down in a little while there wont be too many 70s grades out there, thats what I am gonna try to do.

What is the pricing policy on regrades (if the coin changes grades/doesn't change grades)?

I believe it is the same charge for the service you are requesting "Modern 30-Day" would be $10. If they have a grade guarentee then they should charge you nothing if it is graded incorrectly... but of course the veterans of the board would probably answer this better than me. In any case, the coins are off and I taped a note to the slab stating what I believe the coin should grade, denoting that if they do not agree then to just keep it slabbed with the grade it currently has.

As I previously mentioned, I'm new at this but I have been getting very picky about the coins I decide to send in. While I can agree with most every grade they have given me thus far, this one particular coin I viewed in every angle imaginable, different lights, 8x optic and have even seen a coin graded the same... The strike was great, the other coin had a scratch mine has none. For $10, I will take the chance and hope for the higher grade.

Last night while preparing my coins, I noticed a finger print on one of the coins I pulled out of my brand new Silver Proof set. I dunked it quickly and it spotted, I dunked it again and again and again, it kept getting worse! I dunked it one more time, blotted it and finally it came out fine...phew! I should have all my State Quarter Silver Proof Sets graded after this batch. It's going to be nice to have a full series (up to this point) and something I can call my own! :-)

There are some misconceptions here about the regrade policy. First, I think anyone interested in doing this should contact PCGS directly and ask questions instead of taking as gospel what is put on these Boards as quite often what one reads on these Boards is wrong even though the writers are well intentioned. If you send a coin in for regrade, in the PCGS holder, it gets cracked out of the holder before the graders see the coin. It is then graded and you are charged a regular tier grading fee if the coin comes back the same grade or comes back higher. In my opinion, you are wasting your money if you are submitting 25 modern coins for regrade. Remember, you can obssess about your coins at leisure and grow to know every nuance about them whereas PCGS will grade them by eye in 10-30 seconds.

gemtone65 - I have heard and, based on experience, have every reason to believe, that there are some differences in the regrade procedures at shows vs. through the mail, which make your odds better at the shows. The one negative for show regrades is that there is a minimum $65 fee (if the coin is valued at $1500 or less). If the coin is valued at over $1500, the fee is $100.
