CAMEO JEFFERSONS

After nearly completing a silver roosevelt cameo set, I'm moving on to Jeffersons cameos. What I looked for in roosevelts were nice uniform grey or white devices and black mirrors. Whether CAM or DCAM designation, I made sure the coin looked good and had that contrast. I also compared it for its respective date and pictures in Rick Tomaska's book. I cannot find many Jeffersons that match the pictures in Rick's book. The ones I find on ebay look to be brilliant. Eventhough they're CAM graded, I feel they're low quality cameos, with little contrast. I've looked at hundreds in the last few months from R&I Coins, and I wasn't comfortable in bidding. I'm aware of the metal content difference in the Jeffersons. I'm looking for some advice regarding quality of cameo contrast in Jeffersons. What should a good CAM/borderline DCAM look like. Here's one Jefferson I'm looking at on ebay. Beautiful black fields, but the devices look too dark. HELPJefferson on Ebayimage

Welcome goyankeez. I'm no expert on these older nickels but it looks to me
to be just a reverse away from DCAM. It's very well contrasted and frosty ob-
verse. There should be someone along to give you a more informed opinion.
    Good luck.

    Hi
For an extra $20 same dealer also has an dcam and ultra PF 67 up on ebay. If it doesn't state B/W then
it's probably unlikely or ask the dealer.

Rick Tomaska knows his cameo proofs, but does not put much into his scans. PCGS is pretty picky about CAM and DCAM designations on proof Jeffs from the early 60s and 50s. In fact, I have some coins -- particularly the PR-68 53 in my registry set (photo posted) -- that I cannot believe did not get CAMs. That 53 is one heading for a regrade. In my experience, PCGS errs on the side of caution in granting Jeff CAMs, so you can be fairly assured it will be a solid one. I have a PR-68 CAM like the one you are looking at and it is a pretty coin with good contrast and nice mirrors.
  • Thanks for the bunch of responses. I probably would try to find the 60 in DCAM, but I was just using it as an example. Here's a better example of the type of coin that I may be interested in buying. Again from R&I Coins. It may be how the coin is photographed, but the obverse devices still look quite dark. Nice fields, though. Maybe somebody who purchased this quality of coin from R&I can help me with how the actual coin looks. THanks

Here's the same coin on ebay from jwcameo. I believe he uses fluorescent lighting. Looks much better, but is the cameo distorted/ better than it really is, because of the lighting. What do you think?

    Thanks to all

I have bought PCGS proof Jeffs from both R&I (Rick Tomaska) and jwcameo (Jeff Werlin) and always have been pleased. Jeff, in particular, has a good eye and does a good job of the photography. Some think his lighting over emphasizes the cameo, but I always have been delighted. His written descriptions can be trusted.

  • Thanks Morris, not only for this thread, but for responding to my email the other night (goyankeez@aol.com). Very helpful. You have some really great coins I'm watching. It's a shame I didn't notice you on ebay before. I have a list of a few trusted dealers who I deal with. I look forward to doing some business with you. About that 54 Jefferson in 68CAM you're selling, two others are selling the same coin, R+I and jwcameo. I've got a decision to make.
    Thanks again.
