Grade Three Washingtons :) (3 pics; about 160 kb total)

The scans dulled them out, but they are VERY lustrous

The reverses are all whiter than an old 64 I have (obverse is too toned to compare). They are relatively mark free and the '59 has some obverse toning on the right of Washington... my guess is 65 on each...

Is that wear I see on the 43 and the 59?

on the ear? It does look like one or two of the hair lines are a little smoother than on the 1960- could it be a slightly weak strike?

43 ear, cheekbone, front edge of hair line
59 ear, front edge of hair line

It might just be the washed out look of the luster not showing in the scan, but I'd examine these areas closely before submitting.

I think Washington quarters are one of the hardest series to grade. The relief & detail, even when fully struck is kind of low.

Maybe I am just not familiar enough with the series...

Would I get a better scan if it was in a 2x2 flip rather than a cardboard holder? I was considering also selling them raw and not slabbing them... but I first wanted a grading opinion (if it was high enough, then I would probably stick them in plastic before selling)

Maybe we could get the mint to add wear indicators to new coins... kind of like tires. When this bar shows, it's XF, next bar, VF...

    Sorry- it's late!

  • I would say the 43 is AU53-55, the 59 is AU58 and the 60 would be MS63.
