I was wondering withe the 1955 and 1972 dd were they all run in oder all off one die or did they come from different dies? I know maybe I should break down and buy some more coin books.

My guess is that it was one die only for both dates. When the dramatic effects of the doubling are seen the die is quickly retired. This condition is sometimes confused with another doubling effect called machine doubling. It fooled me until a mean ol' expert set me straight.
The true doubled die is created when the die is struck more than once by an improperly aligned hub. This creates die elements that are doubled. The most famous example of the true doubled die is the 1955/55 doubled die cent. Before hubbing was introduced, the dies were engraved or punched, creating doubling only on single elements.

1955 P had at least three different doubled die obverses for circulating coins. Again die #1 is the big one.
