Are there dealers you would buy raw coins from ebay?

I figured I would throw out a Braddick type question. Very curious to see what everyone feels about this.

  • I buy raw coins all the time from eBay. The caveat is that I've become very good at interpreting scans, duck the bad scans and obvious scams, ask the seller questions, and (ABOVE ALL), generally only buy from sellers with both good feedback and a realistic buy back guarantee... just like everyone should!

So far, I've sent a couple coins back, been only marginally pleased with a few, and done quite well with the rest.

ditto Will, except for the buy them all the time part. i'm not a full timer, but ebay feedback really is a great source of information, and not all of it bad. i've done quite well with the infrequent raw purchases i've made on ebay, taking into consideration of course, all the items mentioned above.

I have no problem with buying raw coins on ebay provided the seller has good feedback and offers a reasonable return privilege. Most of the coins I buy are hard enough to find as it is...I'm not patient enough to turn down the opportunity to aquire one given a decent return policy. I have returned several for cleaning, damage and the like, but I have also picked up some coins I have been looking for...for years. As a basic rule, rare coins not encapsulated are almost always lacking the slab for a reason and it's usually cleaning. Some are really hard to detect and probably broken out of "net" graded slabs or former "body bags." A back to basics understanding of the proper way to inspect a coin will limit your exposure to getting burned buying raw coins. Having said that, I still take a hickie now and then.

  • i would have to say buying raw coins sight unseen is foolish. i have bought a couple dozen ikes and have been disappointed with pretty much all of them. even with scans it is impossible to determine if a coin is worth grading, if that is your ultimate goal. if you are into moderns it is hard to justify buying a 10.00 coin on someones guess that it is "striking ms 66 or better" only to get it and find a gouge on the reverse that will bag it at pcgs. so do you spend another 3.00 sending it back? nah, just dont buy raw coins on ebay. i believe a lot of non gradeable coins are "salvaged" by dealers selling them on ebay. this in not a negative comment. i dont mean to imply that a resale of such a coin is unethical if properly described. but buyer beware, dont expect an ms68 raw coin on ebay.

I suppose if the raw coins were toned they wouldnt be raw. They would already be cooked, baked or steamed. Bearimage

I have to see a good picture of the coin before I buy. Then I limit what I'll pay for the item also. I have gotten some real quality coins at desent prices.

Seems no one wants to name names so I will, The only eBay seller I would buy a raw coin from is, Art Mcbride, ID artmcbride@aol.com. Problem is, he has a following and his coins get bid up. Majority of what he sells are slabs.
