When is someone unethical?

I have read with great interest today's threads on the Dragon/Keets MS66 DMPL transaction. I believe most of the posts have been informative and appropriate given the facts as presented by both parties. The only concern I have is how quick I or any other forum member is to pull the trigger on the issue of another member being "unethical." Unethical implies a dishonest motive behind words and deeds with an intent to manipulate or deceive. I don't see that in this transaction. There is always room for honest differences of opinion over subjective issues such as grade, PQ, distracting, eye appeal etc. Honest differences or however not unethical. They are just differences. I can comfortably hold a difference of opinion about one coin with another forum member (or dealer/grading service) while wholeheartedly agreeing with that same forum member (or dealer/grading service) on another coin. That doesn't make either of us unethical. In fact, these differences are what add much of the fun to collecting and collectors. Where do you draw the line between "difference of opinion" and "unethical?"
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

  • I think the argument here is jaded by friends' feelings being hurt - that's always a hard thing to overcome - but if you read the threads you see that there really is just that - a difference of opinions.

accusations of being "unethical" should not be bandied about before getting input from all parties involved. there've been a couple of threads lately where this term was slammed on someone w/out there input or involvement. remember the old saying about the "glass house"

i think both parties presented their case, and some opinions offered in response. "unethical" doesn't seem to play a big part here, unless there is more going on here that we don't know about.

  • DONT HYPE YOUR COINS! Especially when you claim to know PCGS and grading. I feel keets was influenced into submitting the coin in hopes of getting an upgrade, with no chance of a downgrade! If a person claims he knows PCGS like the back of his hand, then he should open his wallet when he opens his mouth! Its almost like the return policy reads like this, yes you can return the coin but your stupid if you do, I should know, Im the PCGS DMPL man! keets made a mistake, but dragon is not innocent!

  • If I'm involved in a deal with you and I feel "I" got the shaft, then you're unethical.
If I'm involved in a deal with you and "YOU" think you got the shaft, it's an honest difference of opinion and, of course, grading is subjective and you know full well even the grading companies can't agree on grades or artificial toning or even for sure if the coin's been cleaned.
This should clear things up for you.

When someone tells you a coin is nice and original knowing the coin has been cleaned or repaired that's unethical.

If someone thinks a coin is nice and you don't that's a difference of opinion.

I think the only issue in the other thread was Dragon claiming he thought it truely was PQ for the grade (which is just an opinion). If he thought it was a 67, he would not have sold it for what he did. Keets did not ever think it would upgrade, which is why he sent it in under the grade review guarantee program.

Amazing how those who say to not hype, always hype themselves.

Is it unethical to truely believe in yourself? (I would hope not)

A dealer has a coin he claims is nearly a $20,000 coin but is willing to let it go for $1999. That's pushing it if you ask me! image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • If I HYPE something, you better believe Im willing to back it up! I even sent Silver Eagles to a newbie here that got reniged upon by another member! I put my money where my mouth is! Here

I believe a more accurate statement is that the seller stated that without the planchet flaw it would be a $20k coin. That may very well be right on - who the heck can tell off a scan?

DONT HYPE YOUR COINS! . . . . . . submitting the coin in hopes of getting an upgrade (at pcgs) >>

the real issue is: why the he11 waste your time and energy flip-flopping slabs and upgrades and down-grades and no grades, etc??? why not just enjoy collecting coins??? leave the plastic out of it, and most of the "hype" problem goes away.
