system works I am a little behind on learning . I never paid much attention now that I am starting to make a dent in my set should I be really concerned? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I tried to learn but couldn find alot of info. No to hype my set but if you could show me in terms of my set? Because all I understand is Boggs
Thanks in Advance

Boggsy,
Is that with the registry in particular or in general?
I think the registry is far too complicated. The way I understand it, you get more points for having higher grades and more points for having cards with the higher weights. If you look at the weights of individual cards in the set and then multiply them by the grade that you have for each card...then divide by the total of the sum of all the weights...you should be at your number.
That way...if someone has a higher completion percentage...but is missing all of the key superstars...they could be lower ranked than someone with a lower percentage WITH all the superstars.
I have never figured this out for my sets...because I believe it is way too dangerous to be attempted without proper trained supervision. Besides, my sets are better than the others...regardless of what the CU registry says.

Alan
That's the funniest thing I've ever read that you wrote. Dude likes you, now I do, too.
.........With The Registry in mind. I admit I am still confused on the math. Weight x grade divide by all the weights? Sorry I admit I am lost on this part. Somedays the light is dim..somedays it is bright...somedays there is no light at all.......lol
For example, the 1955 Bowman set has 320 cards. Those 320 cards have a combined grade weight of 701. Commons are a weight of one, high number commons are a weight of three, and Mickey Mantle has a grade weight of 10.
So, let's say you have seven cards:
Lo # common: graded PSA 9
Lo # common: graded PSA 9
Lo # common: graded PSA 9
Lo # common: graded PSA 9
Hi # common: graded PSA 9
Semi-star graded PSA 8 (weight of 5)
Mickey Mantle graded PSA 1 (weight of 10)
Thus, your set has seven cards of 320, so it is 2.1875% complete.
Your set's grade weight will be [(9+9+9+9+(9x3)+(8x5)+(1x10)] / 701], or 0.1612. This is obviously such a low number because your set is only has seven cards.
Or, as another example, with the 1955 Bowman set, if I have a card I am missing, at it happens to be a high-number common (Grade-weight of 3). If I am able to obtain that card in PSA 8 and add it to my set registry, it will increase my overall set rating by approximately 0.03 points. (actually, by 0.034236804 points).
Because of the multiplicative effect, a set weight is focused more on completion than on particular grades in the set. Exceptions do occur, however. Again, for example, with the 1955 Bowman registry, bccards! set is 36.56% complete, but yet it is stuck between Ron Hobbs (16.88%) and Davalillo's (20.63%) on the Registry. This is because bccards!'s set is basically comprised of commons and minor stars, wheras Ron Hobbs and Davalillo's sets are comprised of most of the star cards. In fact, Ron Hobbs' set is comprised of only those cards listed in the SMR, plus two commons. And all of the cards listed in the SMR he has graded and in his set.
I'm sure that this just confused the heck out of you (and everyone else). But I crunch numbers for a living, and it is very easy for me, for example, to track my set progress, especially as it relates to David Hall's set, and what I need to acquire or upgrade in order to surpass his set.

I am fairly new at this Registry thing. I havent even cracked 25% yet. But I am learning. Thanks to everyone here.

I have a spreadsheet built for the 1965 set that includes all formulas. You could likely use it as a starting point for your purposes.
